rj_skillz
Hi Guys.. Hope all of you are doing well... Just posting this topic up as I want to know if this affects my smoke. Because it is pretty hard to find a coil burner in the UK, I use my gas cooker! With using the gas cooker, there are parts of the coal which may not be totally lit up-giving out a bright orangey colour! The whole coal does not light up bright orange..the side where its most orange, I sit that part of the coconara on the foil! When it comes to ashing the coals after about 15 minutes..theres always one side of each coal which is totally black! I just feel as if that it affects how much smoke I get out of my hookah! Im happy with the big clouds I get..and if you guys have followed a few of my topics, there is one where I had a few pictures of the amount of smoke I get out of it..but I want more and trying to detect every single variable that could effect my smoke! So comes to the concluding question : If you do not light up your coco's from each and every side..does it affect the amount of smoke you can get out? Thanks in advance for all your comments and reading this topic. RJ
Hunkies!
Whenever im lighting my coconara's i just place them on the burner for a couple minutes on on one side and once its about halfway orange then flip them to the other side for a little till they completely glowing. as for the coals going black one one side, after you ash them turn them to the side thats still glowing so the black area is facing up. they will start to glow after a little bit. and i don't think that this will be affecting the quantity of smoke being produced. hope this helped. the_cool
You will not find coil burners here, trust me I have LOOKED! This is my solution: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Stainless-Steel-Woven-Wire-Mesh-filter-grading-sieve_W0QQitemZ250548750687QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_BOI_Medical_Lab_Equipment_Lab_Supplies_ET?hash=item3a55de895f Tell the buyer you want Mesh Size 4. Put this on your gas cooker, the mesh will glow red and you put the coals on the red bit. flip after a while, and BAM lit coals. I think it does smell a little bit though...but its stainless steel so it is safe. Galvanised steel on the other hand releases toxic fumes if heated. As for the coal going black, my coals ALWAYS go black on the side its laying on. just have to flip it. Which side goes black? The side you cant light or the side you smoke on? the_cool
In the UK, we have the flat plate stove types when it comes to electrical cookers not the coil burners. In houses, everyone uses gas cookers and in student halls, they have the electric flat plate stoves. The flat plate stoves do work, but I keep finding ones which are really expensive, especially compared to the cheap coil burners you guy get. Plus if spend a lot on a flat plate electic stove and it breaks quickly because I am lighting coals, then it is a waste of money! Maybe I will buy one in the future and test it out. As for shipping a coil burner to the UK, we would need a transformer (i think) to make it work. I think I had a look a while back and it is VERY expensive. homme
At my uni we only have coil burners I feel like I'm in heaven now..... Not sure what brand they are but they're dual coil burners... I'll see if my google-fu skills bring anything up!
rj_skillz
Ahh you guys are great Just come back home from a hard nights revision for exams in January and I come to reading all your helpful posts!! Thanks again mattarios2, thank you so much for the offer but the_cool said that we would also need a transformer for it to work Do you think you could find me one which Il be able to use in the UK? WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE SO FCUKIN HARD TO USE A COIL BURNER HERE..I feel cheesed off! Its like $10 for you guys! Lucky people! The side I smoke on is usually lit properly but when I take it off to ash after 10minutes it being on the bowl..the rest of the sides are just black! I think if the whole coal was lit properly at all times..it would give out more smoke! I would understand if all sides were just abit ashey(giving the greyish look on the coals) and with a few blows, it'd go all orangey again but when I do that..only one side becomes orangey. Its so hard to explain..but like I said, its not the biggest problem in the world but when lighting up on gas stove, it makes such a mess! the_cool, do you use the stainless steel woven mesh(size4)? If so, how good is it? helps you cook the coco's all bright orangey from all sides easily? RJ Edited December 21, 2009 by rj_skillz
the_cool
@homme: Actually I went a shisha place at I remember seeing him have a stove with coil burners on them, but he got it second hand. Let me know if your google-fu is better than mine and you find something! Although I wouldnt want a huge stove in my room :| lol @rj: Yeh this method lights them fully, the mesh is basically like the coil you would get on a coil burner, it glows red hot. I use cocochas which are twice the height of coconars but they still light in about 10-12 mins. If i cut them in half they light much quicker. If you want pics lemme know. I always find the side I lay the coal on goes black rather than the other sides, with or without using a windcover. Try using a windcover though, will definately keep the other sides red hot! taxx
i was using a gas burner at first with my coals and it took a very long time, and i had the exact same problem as you, (30min to light the coal). went to walmart and got a portable coil burner, it now takes 5 min to light the coal, fully orange..worth it
inino
I put the blacker side down first, or else its too hot.
