maestroelite
My personal theory on hookah nicotine addiction is that since we inhale it over such an extended period of time compared to a cigarette there you don't get the same rush of brain chemicals as cigarettes and most hookah smokers also don't smoke nearly as much as cig smokers. Similar concept to opiate addictions - sure you can get addicted to any one of them, but the more powerful drugs are going to grab you by the haunches a lot quicker. Its the rush that gets cig smokers in trouble, same thing doesn't happen with hookah - at least for me.

Sonthert
It was about 40 hours in. It didn't seem like it was doing too much to me. And after Tom said it wouldn't really answer any questions about whether I was addicted or not, I figured there was no point to it. I smoke a lot of hours, but not many puffs per. I spend a lot of time with my hose on my leg. Not huffing and puffing continuously.
Stronger tobaccos are definitely going to trigger higher responses in the limbic system of your brain. Higher reward, higher craving. I know I crave hookah more ever since I started virtually exclusively smoking Tangiers and Nakhla. However, it still doesn't trigger the same kind of response to my brain, and to anyone else I know of, that cigarettes do. Unless you're one of the few that sits there and literally puffs on their hookah all day long like a cigarette you won't get the same type of death grip addiction that cigarettes can have on people. At least that's my personal theory.. I'm a bit of a drug/brain nerd. I quit smoking cigs a few years ago except for the occasional one for stressful situations and now I'm just done with em. My lungs are more valuable than that, and until my hookah starts affecting me noticeably I'm not going to completely quit smoking it. Also, consider the fact that most hookah smokers don't really smoke by themselves - this delays the method of action of nicotine even further. This is the same concept that patches use to try to wean smokers off of nicotine addiction, slow and constant addition of nicotine into the system. Bulldog_916
If hookah was really addicting I'd wanna smoke even when I was sick. I've been sick since Tuesday night and I havent craved it at all. Have I thought "Yea it'd be nice to be able to smoke over this weekend."? Yea I have. But I havent bodily or mentally been like "MAN I need a smoke, bad." It hasnt really phased me.

Bulldog_916
Mint flavors dry my throat out. The most of the problem is an itchy and dry throat and some congestion. So I want something a little mellower like a pear or apple flavor.
redjako

Its not that clear cut, though. My thoughts ran this way: I can feel the dependence hook of different substances, like prescription medications, caffeine, and nicotine. I can feel the "urge" to snuff, since it contains nicotine, which is the same addictive thing as hookah in theory. I can easily avoid that urge. I don't feel the same urge from or for hookahs, so I am presuming that something about the two is different. I don't feel the same urge from hookah and from snuff. I, and the people around me, noted no general changes in my personality or mood. I didn't feel any addictive urge for the hookah, so I am concluding it wasn't from addition. I am definitely addicted to caffeine. No doubt about it. Don't really care, but its there all right. I feel snuff compelling me to do more, but hookah doesn't have the same effects for me. I felt like smoking a hookah. I did. Simple. I might be deluding myself here, but I don't think it was from addiction.
In another thread i made a comment on how i get nic fits from hookah, but there differnt from the ones i got from cigaretes. the nic fits i got from hookah were alot more psycalogical and a good bit less pysical comparedl to cigarettes.
Meh, this. Snuff is just like ciggies, it'll bone your head open Not surprised at your reaction and subsequent exaggerated conflagration of mass text onus'ing. Hrm. I've only felt psychological tendencies of addiction towards hookah, though I used to puff like a damn maniac, when I quit 1.5 packs of ciggies per day after a few years, when I'd get a stress / anger related nic fit from the ciggies. Vladimir
Addiction is different for everyone, I think it is kind of funny that people are saying obviously hookah isn't addictive since they don't feel like they HAVE to smoke. Anyone can get addicted to anything, depending on several factors. I went from chewing 3-4 times a day since I was 16 or 17 to nothing last week, haven't had a single dip or felt overly tempted to have one. That is hardly proof that chew isn't addictive, nor is it proof I am impervious to addiction as there are plenty of other habbits I am addicted to. scratchy
I just got back from a 2.5 week vacation at the coast and the only time I even thought about hookah was when I saw knock off KM's at a liquor store. Then again, I smoke cigs, so the "urge" for hookah might be subdued by that
