LZ22
The decade is almost to a close. Thinking back to everything that came about, 10 years ago seemed like an ancient, primitive world we lived in. So much has changed that if you went in a time machine to year 2000 you would probably wonder "How did we survive without this widget?". Ten years ago, we couldn't have possibly conceived events that were to come. The world is truly a dynamic place that changes exponentially faster. I've been reading news articles reflection upon the past decade and everything that went on, and it amazed me some of the things that I feel like have been around for ages are only a few years old. 9/11/01, 2 major wars, global recession, human genome is mapped, we land a robot on mars, Space shuttle Columbia blows up killing its crew, Hurricane Katrina, the Asian Tsunami left over a quarter million dead, Enron scandal, Google IPO's, iPod is invented, HDTV's are standard, camera phone was invented...now we have iPhones and blackberrys, robotics have advanced to a point where an amputee can control his/her prosthetic limb with thought alone, the Euro currency replaces many European country's currency, broadband internet usage was at 10% in 2000 and is estimated at 62% end of 2010, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Hybrid vehicles are common, the first privately funded space flight, ice is discovered on the moon, scientists determine how old the universe is, etc etc etc.... The list can go one forever. The point is, there was a lot crammed into this past decade. Its going to be amazing to see what unfolds this next decade, knowing that in 10 years when we look back, today will once again seem like an ancient, primitive world. Predictions?
Cell phones go away. All that we need is a little ear piece to talk to who ever we want. T-shirt TVs (tiny LEDs displaying HD picture) become a cool novelty, perhaps have a trend associated with them? Computers as we know them go away and more often than not you'll be doing more of your computing from your TV and through it than through a separate device. Gaming is done in a dedicated room or play arcade. Entire facilities are dedicated to immersive gaming. You literally are in the game. This is done the same way XBOX live is now. Subscription based and you can use it whenever you want. Just find a facility. You're put in a body suit with a display and it reflects back other players as their characters or parts in the game. If you're "shot" the suit stiffens up and you fall in a controlled way to the ground. Hits in specified areas result in different injuries. It will be totally immersive. People WILL be having sex with robots. It will be happening...a lot. You'll literally have areas of town dedicated to this activity. In fact, most everyone will have some form of robot doing some dedicated task. Dishes, vacuuming, dusting, bathroom cleaning, lawn and garden care, etc. Food such as vegetables will be organic and hydroponic, the purest and healthiest. Fat will be regulated by drugs tailored to the task. Keeping your body mass index within a range, keeping your weight down. This in conjunction with a blood pressure drug will make early onset heart disease not only manageable but far far less likely to cause death. Cars wont require human interaction to drive. Not only wont they require it, they will discourage it. As human-driven cars fall out of the market, deaths associated with car accidents slowly drop, year by year. Oil prices will reach up to 300 dollars a barrel. This pushes gasoline into the 7-9 dollar a gallon range, putting it out of most people's budgets. Natural gas engines will come into their maturity in the consumer car market. I'm willing to say that natural gas cars will be about 25 percent of the new car market by 2014. Electrics will make up about 30. The other 45 will be super-efficient gas or hybrid gas/diesel-electric vehicles. These are just a few of my visions for the decade. We'll see how it really goes. LZ22
I think people don't realize it, but by the end of the century I think A.I. will be playing a huge role in the lives of everybody. AI has made insane progress in just the last 5 years, and since technology evolves at an exponential rate, AI will explode onto the scene by the end of the next decade. Maybe Google will become self-aware.

Maybe Google will become self-aware.
google becoming self aware would be far worse then skynet. in the next ten years some of the best sci fi things i envision (most of these i believe will exists but not be commercially available.) teleportation- this has already been figured out on a single atom level (they can teleport a single atom at a time right now.) and i think within the next ten years we will figure out how to transport actual items (imagian you place an order at hookahjohns and it arrives at your door five minutes later. ) -im going to make a separate post on this cuss it brings up some concerns for me. holographic projection- there are several concepts for this at the moment some even work. this will be available in tvs and computers but for the most part will be found mostly in theaters. some of the concepts use ultra fine powder being dropped through the air. that then reflect the projection (think the computer on bones.) but some of the research that is underway today used fine particles embedded into clear membranes that are layered (hundreds of ultra thin clear sheets of plastic wrap with dust in them with the projector in the center. the dust changes from clear to solid with a small charge so it either reflects the light or lets it pass though unreflected.) and there are a few others as well but im not familiar with them (the military showed off one not to long ago on tv) nanobots- microscopic robots that can be injected into the blood that can destroy single cells in the body without harming the ones around them (break apart blood clots destroy previously inoperable cancer one cell at a time.) wrist top computers- think a calculator watch that has windows installed. these will be watches that are the computer itself they will work with monitors keybords and mice via bluetooth or some other wireless data transfer protocall. (all your documents videos mp3s ect.. are on the watch you just need to go to your monitor to access them or use a portable monitor/keybord similar to a cell phone) these are all technologies that are currently being researched right now and will most likely become available in the next ten years.
