rj_skillz
Hi guys, Hope your all doing well I came across this really annoying virus which was called RootKit on my girlfriend's laptop and had to fork out £20 to get a Computer Care shop to remove it! I tried to remove it myself but the laptop just froze up all the time!! I've decided its best to invest in the best anti-virus software pack out there and wanted your guy's help on which one to choose. I've heard Norton is great and also BitDefender. If you use any software, which one do you use? Thanks for reading RJ
Chreees
I use AVG for regular checkups and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware to remove those really nasty viruses. Both are free.
Arcane
avg, antivir (what i use), or avast all free....

ryno
Avira, ad aware, and malwarebytes anti malware are what i use. All are free and work great. And they can all be found on download.com
Chreees
I was using Avira, but it never felt like it was doing anything with how simple it is... lol. Plus it kept detecting these 2 issues on my computer but couldn't ever get rid of them. Switched to AVG, and after the first scan it detected the two items and got them off for good. So, basically I have AVG because it removed two issues that Avira couldn't... Malwarebytes is just full of win for when it comes to removing that hardcore shit. The computers at my work have AVG and Malwarebytes, as do all of the hundreds of computers on campus. It's gotta be good if a university is using it to protect their computers... Chreees
Yeah, that was another thing I hated about Avira... Damn popup asking me to upgrade everytime I restarted my computer, which is a lot because it's a laptop and I take it to work and stuff. No popups with AVG. Vladimir
Kaspersky, last I checked, was always ranked the highest among the paid programs.
Click
Kaspersky is probably the best you can buy. For free I would rank them after using them all three for 6+ months each: 1 - Avast 2 - Avira 3 - AVG
Bulldog_916
I use ESET NOD32 antivirus. Best out there besides possibly Kaspersky's lab. I like to come at it with a combo of the antivirus and Haute Secure so that I know that nothing is screwing around with my system.
Stuie
Windows Live One Care is what I use. Personally. I like it a lot. Can install on 3 computers. Have maintenance and backup setup. Norton is a total resource hog. McAfee deletes tons of stuff without telling you. Lost a lot of PDFs and eBooks that way. AVG.... I just find that it's constantly trying to update and gets annoying at times. Personal Application It's good. Business...just shoot yourself in the foot and blow up your network. Trend Micro... Causes a lot of conflicts with software when it's scanning. Annoying as hell. Kapersky.... This is a good Program! Avast...Stuff just seems to slip by it more than people want to admit. Of course I still think that no matter what you use you should have the following: Spybot - Search and Destroy (Don't install Tea Timer) MalwareBytes Ccleaner (For System Cleanup) Defraggler (For System Defrag)
Guest Cheng
I feel sorry for the guys who use norton, you should uninstall that crap and install ESET Nod32. When I had norton I ended up with around 20 viruses on my computer before norton mentioned I had any... Using Nod32 I have never got a virus, I was running a vista install for 2.5 years with no infections. I formated and installed win 7 and carry on using Nod32 Dont wanna pay? Torrent it
Vladimir
To be fair, you just have to be smart. Haven't had a virus in several years, never had an anti-virus for more than a day before I was fed up with it .
0ctane
personally, i have never used anti-virus on either one of my computers. unless this computer will be used by many other people i wouls stay away from it. my personal experience is that it bogs down the system too much to benefit. i think as long as you are smart about what you click on, and preview attachments before downloading them and using a good filter on your email you will be safe. now as for your girls computer, i would just buy her the anti-virus. Norton is what my college uses and gives out for free to us as students and they have yet to have any big problems with viruses here.
vitza
cant believe no one brought this up yet... microsoft security essentials. best shit ive ever used and icing on the cake is that its free!

delSol_si
this is a very good topic. I used norton before, but it never really worked that well, had a hard drive crash while i was using it. avast- that little shit got soo fucking annoying i uninstalled it in 2 days. mcafee-piece of annoying shit pc cillin(spelling) - annoying little booger that never worked So far i have yet to encounter a antivirus program that actually works. the only one i know of that comes close is buying a mac i don't have any antivirus on my mac and don't generally have many problems. The other thing i can suggest is jsut backing everything up on an external hard drive, and then when you do get a virus, just reinstall windows and wipe out the entire computer. I've done this several times, works like a charm. I think i may give nod32 a try, never heard of it, but it seems to be getting a lot of good reviews on this topic.
Vapor Clash Team
Wiping a PC clean is always last result or in a case where my client wants it done. You can bring a computer back to good working order with numerous programs. Most common infection a person reinstalls a PC is a ROOTKIT, they are nasty and can be avoided. Most of the current ones are tamed such as Internet Security 2010, antivirus 2009, and a fake looking security center. I recommend always having malwarebytes installed (its free) run it weekly in combination with antivirus and you should be set. Be cautious when browsing the web and emailing, emails that may look legit from family and friends may be bad, such as a link stating to check out this video, when actually the link is an executable application it asks you to install. If you encounter anything similar stop everything and scan your computer. Most big name antivirus programs protect just as much as the other, only thing is how intrusive they are to you just like pesky Windows Vista. bolt in blue
I had big problems with Norton/Symantec. That said, I still have it running on my home PC since I got it free from my school when I was in college. I haven't had any viruses there, but I know what I'm doing. We went Symantec to Kaspersky to NOD32 at work. Kaspsersky works well, but it doesn't look good using security software from a Russian company when you are in the security industry. We had problems with it really slowing down machines - especially killing internet speeds. We switched to NOD32 and I have no complaints. Very fast and lightweight, yet effective. First time I haven't felt my computer get slower after installing antivirus.
Codename067
I Would like to consider my self a bit savvy with computers, software and hardware, and I only use AVG with Adaware. Have not gotten a single virus on my PC for a good 4+ years.
ryno
I did switch over to AVG from Avira. While I think it might take up a slight bit more memory, I like it better. And the memory isn't really a problem on my pc. Intel Core Duo, 4gb ram, 3ghz motherboard on Windows 7, and it runs efficient.
toast
alright i'm a huge nerd and i've done IT work in the past. if you have a legit copy of windows then "Microsoft Security Essentials" is free and awesome. i switched to it from nod32 which i've always recommended in the past. in a few tests i tried out nod32 beat kaspersky at detection hands down, but thats just in my experience. DO NOT GET NORTON. I have seen so many computers in the past running norton, either internet security, 360, or whatever else they have. these computers were still incredibly infected with all sorts of viruses. aside from bogging down your computer they just DON'T WORK. I'd put McAfee in that same category. try Microsoft Security Essentials, its free and a really good product. that or nod32.
