Is This Normal With Starbuzz?

Recommended Posts

Here recently I've began increasing my hookah hobby, smoking 1 1/2 hour twice daily. I had previously only smoked up to five times a week up to 45 minutes with using primarily Starbuzz. However, Starbuzz, now, only fucks me up beyond anything that is comfortable, with extreme light headedness and some serious heart stress. I've never had any negative effects from the other washed brands I've tried. So what the hell is with Starbuzz? is this normal?

Well if you're always inhaling from the hose and not taking any breaks in between, it's normal. Take some air breaths between every inhalation at least

Nope that's not an issue. And I did learn that the hard way...

What type of coals are you using...

Coconaras... I use two and that, along with a wind cover, lasts me the entire session... Edited by Red_Pyramid

It could be multiple things at play here.

it could be as suggested your not getting enough air in between inhaling. (the carbon levels in your blood build up more as you smoke so the amount of air you need 20 minutes in is less then the amount of air you will need an hour and a half in.)

it could be your coals (quick lights will cause this the more of them you use in a session the more effects you will feel from them)

it could be the amount of nicotine (if you were use to smoking for half an hour and you triple that time your also tripling the nicotine going into your system.)

you may not be purging the hookah enough also (some ppl on this forum will say oh you dont need to purge if you keep smoking its only there to vent stale smoke. well thats bull the purge is there to vent stale smoke yes but its also there to vent the co that builds up in the base.)

it may also be something other then tobacco in your hookah such as a build up of residue from soap (if you use dish soap to clean it)

and sometimes new smokers will let the bowl burn up without realizing its done. smoking shisha that has been burnt to a crisp will only make you feel sick.

it will be a process of elimination for you start with the simplest one and work your way down.

first try a couple different types of coal
then try adding more time between inhales the further you get into your session
try purging more often
change your cleaning method (and clean the hookah after every use)
and last pay attention to how you feel and at the first sign of sickness check your bowl and make sure it still has smokable shisha in it

and if none of that helped it may be that your not used to that much nicotine just chill and go back to your normal amount of time per session and slowly increase the amount of time over a a couple weeks and your body will adjust to it as your sessions get longer.

No offense seefoodlover but it sounds like the classic symptoms of too much CO, no need to see a dr. for it.

Seriously 1) make sure your coals are completely lit, 2) make sure you have holes that aren't covered by coal, 3) try using less coals, 4) don't put them in the very center of the bowl no matter what you're doing.

and take time inbetween inhales as well as have fresh air coming near by.

Try eating some fruit and drinking water while smoking it. If fruit's not your fancy, try any sort of food. I had the same problem with SB so I read up on some more traditional methods and the fruit eating helped. If that doesn't help, try adding a little extra water or whatever to your base just for the SB (dunno if that'd help, but the idea makes sense to me).

That's not it, as I inhale no differently with Golden Layalina and Tonic and NONE of this shit ever happens with them...
it could be your coals (quick lights will cause this the more of them you use in a session the more effects you will feel from them)
Do not and will not use quicklights...
it could be the amount of nicotine (if you were use to smoking for half an hour and you triple that time your also tripling the nicotine going into your system.)
I've been doing this new routine for almost a month, also like I said GL and Tonic do not have any of these effects...

That I've never heard of, but good suggestion, I will see what happens...
it may also be something other then tobacco in your hookah such as a build up of residue from soap (if you use dish soap to clean it)
No, I've gotten to the point where I can tell it's used up...
and sometimes new smokers will let the bowl burn up without realizing its done. smoking shisha that has been burnt to a crisp will only make you feel sick.
I do not smoke the bowl black, there is always char on top and slightly unchared shisha at the bottom at the end of my sessions. I don't go to the point of utter harshness...

The whole heart stress thing is concerning me. I'd call a doctor right away with the heart stress thing. Is this your first time doing this? or has this happened to you before?
Like I said, this only happens with Starbuzz. All other washed brands I'm just fine...

I was under the impression that It takes a long while to reach 30% CO in bloodlevel to get those nasty side effects.

CO has 80x affinity to red blood cells than oxygen. So no, it only takes a few mins for the CO to accumulate in your body...
Be careful, and smoke in a ventilated area, and if you begin to feel bad stop and get some fresh air, and consult a doctor if you still have heart symptoms..

Or just try to smoke something else and report back.. maybe you just dont tolerate SB well for a reason

See, I really doubt that. According to health advisories on CO, depending on the PPM of CO a hookah puts off, which I don't think could even reach 100ppm, it would take a few hours of constant exposure to see any side effects(30-35% or more CO bloodlevel). If it does get to 100 ppm CO then a two hour session could cause such side effects, but I read of people exceeding this without any adverse effects. I really doubt it when people say too much CO... If 30% of your red blood cells are saturated with CO,(30% blood level) you're pretty much dead or at the intensive care unit of your nearby hospital.
You're confusing % of red blood cells saturated with CO and PPM (concentration of CO per million particles in the air)

I agree with you that hookah smoking shouldnt get anywhere near that concentration though,
At 100 ppm, you get light headed and headaches in a few hours though.

I just wanted the poster to be careful because CO intoxication is a serious condition. Edited by qazxcv
