baumann
Just ordered some OG Tangiers Cocoa and I want to make SURE I get the acclimation correct this time with OG. I was reading a little about the 4hrs/20hrs method (leave container open for 4 hours and closed for 20). Questions: 1. After those first 24 hours, do I repeat the process by opening the container for 4 hours and closing it for 20 again the next day? Should I keep doing this every day? 2. Should the 4 hours that the container is open be the time period in which I plan to smoke? In other words, If I want to smoke between 1 and 5pm, should that be my open container time? Thanks! Victim026
You should only need to acclimate once unless you have drastic changes in weather, and if the weather is drastic it could take quite a bit more time on the initial acclimation. When we go through weird spells here in texas sometimes it takes up to 2 weeks to get stuff to acclimate.
1. No need to repeat, once the 24 hours is up it should be safe to just keep it closed. If it doesn't smell / taste right after that, try giving it another day. Don't forget to stir it occassionally while its open, too. 2. This isn't CRITICAL, but it's definitely a good idea. Just give it a go and let us know how it turns out! LZ22
If I may throw in my own question, but completely on topic: This may sound stupid, but is it possible to acclimate it TOO much? or can you do the 4hrs/20hrs process over and over and over and it would only get better?
Well, you might want to read some other peoples responses but ive found that whenever I leave it open for a day or so it would smoke really harsh. dizzbizz
I don't really see why you'd acclimate it more than it needs. If its smoking like it should why are you going to try and acclimate it more? I think the only reason it would get worse is if you don't do the acclimation process correctly. EX. not stirring it enough, or doing it at the wrong times.
Short answer: No, with an asterisk. Long answer: maybe. A fair percentage of people who have recurring problems leave the tobacco open to the air continuously. It may or may not affect the acclimation...it might be nothing to do with it. Its not acclimated, leave it open, it never acclimates so they leave it open. Hard to tell. Like a 2L bottle of soda, though, keeping it selaed slows the evaporation of volatile flavor and aroma components...so some flavors will fade if left open for long periods of time.
