Hassouni
So for all those who remember, two weeks ago, while still in Beirut, I picked up a replacement made in Egypt vase for the shattered Bohemian one I got there 5 years ago. I went to set everything up tonight, and noticed a leak. A leak? Yes. Apparently, the new vase has been cracked! I noticed my roommate moved it...I can't hold him responsible yet, but it wasn't leaking last time I smoked it. Water an inch or two above the bottom of the downstem now leaks out at such a rate that within 20 minutes, the water level is below the downstem. As you can see from the attachments, there are a series of cracks along the base, extending around quite a bit. Nothing shattered, but there are a lot of cracks. Is it salvagable? Can I superglue the cracks or something? Otherwise, what size vase will replace it if I have to order online? It's a bit under 10.5" high (to fit in a large Mya case), and has an opening just shy of 2", tho that is a bit wider than it needs to be, so I'd say 1.75" will be ok. What are the various sizes, 26, 30, etc? Needless to say, I'm really pissed off. I bought this 13 days ago, not even 2 weeks, and it survived an absurd transcontinental plane ride..and now this. thehelios
Ouch, that sucks. My buddy used glue on a cheapo egyptian small glass base and it didn't leak anymore but looked like crap. If you're into the aesthetics, get a new vase since not much on your side can be done to fix it w/o it looking terrible. I can only think of super heating the base so it starts becoming moldable but there are tons of problems there. So yeah, either have it look bad with glue or get a new vase. Hassouni
It's not that visible unless you're looking for it, since it's on the lower lip. Any kind of glue you recommend?
thehelios
He never told me what glue he used but seeing the profuse amount he used, I'm assuming normal glue. If you know how to properly apply super glue (from those tiny bottles) and it dries clear, it might actually work well. Just remember, DO NOT USE GORILLA GLUE!!! That crap will expand and WILL break the vase.
Hassouni
I'm thinking superglue gel, not the liquid stuff....
poncho
ok let me chime in here, so those are some pretty deep cracks and since they are already leaking, yes they will break more in the future and cause that to become a worthless pile of broken glass. So your best bet is to NOT USE GLUE! You want to go to home depot and buy Silicon 1. What you'll want to do is smear it all over that part, making sure it fills all the cracks, then one it dries for 24-48 hours, what ever it says to let it cure for, do it it'll really make a difference in the next step. If you do it nice and thin, you can take a razor blade and just scrape off all the extra silicon thats on the vase, and leave just the cracks filed in. The reason you want silicon is because it is always flexable, so it wont crack itself. It also will allow the cracks to move a bit here an there actually releaving stress. I know thats sounds wierd, but if you have broken glass, and you fill it with something that wont allow it to more at all, the points right about were you glued can become more stressed and cause the cracks to run. your best bet is to get a new vase, but the silicon will work for the time being. hope this helps, if you have any questions dont hesitate to ask
kvtaco17
I'd epoxy that... a 2 stage type that doesn't mind water...
liquidglass
get some Amazing Goop (i think that's the name) it's a silicone type adhesive. I sealed up some cracks in a base one time like this.
Sonthert
Its toast. Once that soda glass gets to crackin', it will just keep spreading. Kinda like cracks in a car windshield. Sucks, but get a new jar. It probably had some flaws you didn't notice in it to begin with. Sometimes, very faint grooves can crack quite easily. Hassouni
God damn it. Anybody used these? http://www.hookah-shisha.com/p-1037-syrian-glass-hookah-base.html
Sonthert
They look nice. How big is the opening on your jar? I would guess those jars are 26*.
Hassouni
The opening on the one I just got is almost 2 inches, however, I had to wrap my (what do you call it, chamber?) with electrical tape for it to fit in, so I'd guess 1.75 inches is right. What do the 26, 30, etc numbers mean? It's obviously not a metric thing
Normally I would agree with you Eric, but having actually zombified one of my broken bases I know it can be rebuilt, we have the technology Now, I'm not saying that he shouldnt' get a new base, that should be a priority as soon as he can. BUT he can make that one work and stay usable. So if you love the base don't give up on it, you can make it work again!

Hassouni
Eric, can you elucidate me on what the numbers mean?
Victim026
I know a sizr 30 gasket is 1.75", standard KM. In an effort to fix your current base though i would get aquarium sealant from a pet or specialty aquarium store.
Sonthert
There are a number of standard jar sizes: 32* (The largest) 30* Egyptian standard (Although KM has been moving towards 26* recently) 26* Syrian Standard 24* Syrian small (Not really a standard size) 22* Small Standard 18* Mini jar Each has a specific size of hole opening associated with it. A 30*, for example, has a 1.75" opening. A 32* has a 1.875" opening. Etc.
Hassouni
That's bizarre. I was told what I bought was a 26, but it's for sure at LEAST 1.75", probably more. Sadly the KM vases are too tall to fit in my Mya case

T355
I had a small crack in the base of my old hookah. I used ''Fix-A-Windshield''. You may want to give it a shot. Its 10 bucks at walmart in the automotive department. It worked for me just fine. You actually couldn't even see the crack anymore and it didn't leak at all. Just do it the same way it says on the back of the package, but instead of using the suction cups just hold the little funnel thing that makes the seal with your hands.
