Molson
Ok so obviously I was inspired by scalli's olivewood bowl. But I remeber thinking why not just carve the funnel into the bowl instead of the metal contraption he had. Anyways this was my third atempt and I know why he did it that way. The bowl was to small for my to get either my skew or my gouge in, I found another way but it was a huge PITA. So I had some spare olivewood for bottle stoppers and thought as what the hell I'll give it a go. This bowl took me almost 2 hours. I didn't bother to get rid of the swirl marks because its almost 6 in the morning. I'll get around to giving it a nicer natural finish tomorrow or the day after. The walls are a bit thin but it should hold up. I know it's small but I am always a solo smoker who can't sit for an hour or more. I like my 30min bowls and this should be perfect. Comments and Criticism are always welcome! This was the first "successful" bowl I made but not the last. I haven't smoked out of it because I no longer have a hookah hahaha. Was browsing the forum and though i'd give it a go. Here it is! But wont a bowl made out of wood burn?
I've been using my scalli bowl now for about 8 months and it does havve some small color change around the top edge of the bowl from the heat but no burn marks. The big key(or at least what I think) is the fact that Scalli soaked the bowl for quite awhile in olive oil to help protect the wood, I also soak it once a month for 24-48 hours to recoat it and rehydrate the wood.
gunsboy
Does the wood contribute to making the smoke tastier since wood might absorb some of the shisha??
LIQUIDGSR
I have burned mine, but only from some serious heat problems; otherwise never burned it ever again. I usually do not get any other taste other than what im smoking at the given moment. I have left shisha sitting in it a while also and it has not effected the taste. I have soaked my bowl in glycerine for a few weeks though so that might have done something.
Hmm I woudn't mind making a few more. If I can get enough interest I would consider just doing a chainof 5-6. O The only issue is I don't have a hookah to try it out and see how it smokes just yet. Maybe i'll send one out to a real veteran here to give it a review and some feedback to see how it really is. I have cinsedered dipping mine in olive oil at first but I know the boiling point of olive oil is fairly low. I decided to actually dry out all the oils with acetone that dries almost instantly on my lathe so there are no harmful chemicals remaining. I would like to see how it holds up when dry. On the other hand I know when you smoke a bbq a nice peace of fish on a plank of wood you dip it in water. Another I guess to try would be dunk the bowl in water before every smoke but then you'd run the risk of warping. That all being said i'm not to concerned about ruining the bowl as it only took me 2 hours and that's with me making things up as I go. I could always whip up a new one. Molson
Oh I forgot to add. Now that I think about it I would only consider selling them with scalli's permission. The way I see it he came up up with the olive wood idea, and he also sold the bowls, I think it would be unfair to him if I were to take away from his market. Stuie
Very Nice. Looks great. Scalli Designed his to be a phunnel and an Egyptian style. I love mine, feel bad because I haven't reviewed it yet. Talked to him a little while ago, still doing rehab for his arm hasn't smoked much or done much of anything. But he did crack open some of the goodies I gave him for Christmas. I was thinking of also making wooden handles for a hose just to class it up a bit. They would be reall easy to make to since they have a hole through them I could just spin it off a mandrel. The set would probibly take me about an hour to make. Once I get my hookah in I will start taking measure with my digital calipers and work it all out. Anyways I Have thought of the idea but the big thing is with the wood being submerged in the water mold can sprout. But if I can find the threads on most valve ports i might make a wooden purge valve that can just screw in. That would be really easy. Another problem with the stem would be drilling the hose and valve port.
