Tyler
There is a world-wide virus being sent around that can infect everything from macs, to PCs, to phones, to blackerrys. This virus spreads through facebook, myspace, twitter, e-mails, text messages, and packet sending websites. Please check your OS update system for a patch (Vista 64 bit has one but 32 doesn't yet) and I'm not sure about other OSs. My friends with Snow Leopard have already had their systems infected as that was the first attacked OS. The Xavier campus' computer labs are down due to this virus getting into the systems and the 5/3 bank computers in Cincinnati were unavailible for deposits/withdrawls/ect. This is a serious threat. I am not a computer wiz when it comes to viruses and stuff so I don't really know what it does alls I know is what I heard from the bank and the Xavier library.
Yeah, Norton and McAfee bog your computer down with so many unnecessary programs and ads, they're basically viruses that you paid to fuck over your PC in the first place -.- Check out Avast! Antivirus. It's free for home use, very process efficient, simple to use, and continually rated as one of the most effective protection tools on the market. srawas89
Yea everybody please be careful this virus really has fucked Cincinnati. I kind of feel bad for the people at Xavier (I go there as well), they got hit with 2nd virus attack so if you have already experienced a virus in the last couple days continue to be very cautious as it may not be entirely over. I just hope avast will be fine and keep from harms way.

I've barely used a Mac, and don't know a thing about virus protection for them. Basically I was saying I don't know what I'm going to do about protection when I get the Mac. Sorry if I came off as arrogant, lol. Btw, I need the Mac for Final Cut Pro.... I'm a EMC Production major and basically I'll be editing a lot of video/audio from here on out...
i dunno...i'm not sure how difficult writing a virus for a mac is, so i can't comment. but, i think the only way you'll see an increase on Mac attacks is if Macs are used more like PCs... let's face it...a majority of the big businesses, DoD, etc still run on PCs....and it seems like those are the people/organizations that viruses are usually targeted against. until Macs start usurping PCs in that capacity, i don't think an increase in viruses specifically for macs is likely... Sariél
No propaganda, I've been running Mac for 19 years. In that time I've had 1 virus embedded in a pirated tetris clone. One scan with a freeware anti-virus utility, and 20 minutes later, all gone. This was on System 6. Current OSX users, there is a security update for Snow Leopard released last night. Might be related. liquidglass
Well the fallacy that people have about macs thinking they are impossible to infect is terrible. (not saying anyone here thinks this, b/c we are all open minded and thinking human beings) Macs don't have viruses written for them like PCs because they don't have that much of the market. Even though it is easier. I'll have to find the article again but there was an article about the vulnerabilities of OSX vs. XP and/or vista. Which ever one was more comparable and it was shown that the mac os had nearly triple the vulnerabilities. So the idea that they can't be hurt leads the to problem of users feeling invulnerable then being too ignorant to handle a problem when it does happen. - and not propaganda against macs, as I have said for a while, like the products hate the company. So macs are cool in my book (just too expensive, but that's another story)

So macs are cool in my book (just too expensive, but that's another story)
^^^ this. Macs are used enough (yet) for it to be worthwhile for an attacker to write a virus for Macs when his goal is to infect as many computers as possible. They're becoming more and more popular, however, which means you will see an increase in them soon enough. The problem is that, since Macs have gone so long without need for protection, the security they have right now is spotty and very susceptible; a smart programmer could wreck havoc with Mac OS as it is now. Additionally, MacOS is Linux-based, which makes writing scripts for them rofl-easy. I had a friend who always bragged about his Mac and it's God-like infallibility, so I wrote a 5-minute script and imbedded it in a link on my personal website and asked him to troubleshoot it for me. after he activated it, it installed without even a user confirmation, and every time his computer restarted the screen's native resolution was defined as 1pix by 1pix smaller. After a month he started bitching about his monitor being buggy, and a couple weeks later he was really freaking out, almost sent it in for repair but I told him what I did and fixed it. One of my favorite pranks. :-)
