Sonthert
http://pipesmagazine.com/python/pipe-and-tobacco-news/bill-introduced-to-further-raise-taxes-on-pipe-tobacco/ This is the gist of the matter. They want to make the tax rate on pipe tobacco the same as roll-your-own cigarette tobacco, which would raise the excise taxes on a 250g about $12...so your favorite Tangiers would go from about $13 to $25. Starbuzz would go from $23 to $35. This increase will disproportionately affect hookah tobacco since we use five times as much tobacco in terms of excise tax as brier pipe smokers. We will keep you posted as to what we need to do as a group to stop our government from railroading us.
JOE
wow, an estimated 12$ hike on 250g?!?? WOW. I'd love to check the article, but the link is not working.

r1v3th3ad
holy shit leave it to big brother, probably going to pay for all of our over seas expenses that are not necessary(like military bases in Germany) leave us alone any word on when this will go into effect? I'm probably gonna buy at least 10kilos of tangiers before it does just to save all that money
Sonthert
If you read the google search, one site offers that its the roll-your-own-cigarette tax increase that started this mess. Roll-your-own-cigarette tobacco manufacturers just started calling their product pipe tobacco to pay the much lower tax rate.

Sonthert
This is currently in th House Ways and Means Committee, so if it goes through, it might be 6-12 months before tax rates spike. I wasn't happy about the tax rate going from $1.0969/Lb to $2.8311/Lb, but it wasn't unfair. This is completely unfair. I'm going to start obtaining contact information for all these people and post them.
Guest Cheng
Dont the American government make enough money from Iraq's oil? Why do they need to tax more on Shisha? Oh I forgot wars costs money When I was younger the military came to my school to promote, apparently a surface to air missile costs £36,000 each, they were laughing at how much money they got to burn during training how to fire weapons. fillup
Just when I thought the taxes were over they do this. I smoke cigars and know all well about the taxes that they have passed. I hope so much that this doesnt pass. Think there would be a way to classify hookah tobacco as just hookah tobacco and not pipe tobacco? Im sure theres a legal loophole to the whole thing. Sonthert
Loophole wise, Yeah there are loopholes, but that involves breaking the law, which we'd like to avoid if at all possible. The loopholes are what might be putting us in the place we're in now. Roll-your-own-cigarette tobacco manufacturers calling their product pipe tobacco. I think we need to nip this thing in the bud. We start manufacturing under a different tobacco classification, they raise those tax rates too.
seefoodlover
former djarum cigarettes have done something similar. They now manufacture their cigarettes in packs of 12, marketing them as Clove Cigars. Since, the outlawing of flavored cigarettes, was to outlaw flavored cigarettes, not cigars. Whats the best way to contact these people? Phone? Email? USPS? What do you guys think? [/quote] I would suggest email because of the fact that we can send it out among others who may not be part of the forum and have them forward it as well. The more emails sent, the more likely they are to consider public opinion. As a manufacturer I would suggest you do the draft and we can all cut and past it into an email list. Format for all senators and representatives email addresses are the same usually, so it should be easy (but somewhat time consuming) to compose the address list. Once it's put together though, it will be easy to forward on everywhere. And if it bounces back and forth so much the better. It's unlikely that anyone is going to go through each individual email and sort them out. It's more likely that they'll simply see they've gotten XXXX number of emails against unfair hikes. aethiolas
I would highly recommend that anyone who is interested in stopping this writer a letter to their appropriate congressman. Letters are MUCH more effective than an e-mail or even a call b/c they take much more time to put together so they don't get 1000 of them in everyday like they do with e-mails. As soon as I research this properly I will definitely be doing so for my state. We grow tobacco here so our rep should definitely be against this. Charley
here is a contact form for the The House Ways and Means Committee It looks like it only sends to the chairman of the committee. http://waysandmeans.house.gov/singlepages.aspx?NewsID=10470 oh and Eric if anyone on here would know this its you. what is the average weight of the tobacco in shisha before the flavorings and juices are added? In the emails I am planning to send I want to let them know that just because the box says 250G dose not mean that there is 250g of tobacco in it I am also trying to find email addys for all committee members I will post them when I can (if i can find them that is) I recommend everyone email them and let them know how you feel and that it is unfair to tax shisha by weight instead of by the amount of tobacco it actually contains. This weight would ***INCLUDE*** the cigar box. Im not sure if they will do this with hookah tobacco but it is a possibility.
