Issues With Mizo Grape?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys i recently having a session with mizo grape and it didn't really taste that grapey at all, almost a burnt taste...i remember getting this kind of taste before which is probably why i didnt smoke it for so long.

i use the same packing method for nakhla, i picked it up from the "Mattarios tutorial" for Nakhla and and Nakhla mizo, although i use 3 whole CH nats instead of 4 half peices (cocos or CH nats). i should probably try mizo grape again with 4-5 half pieces of coals but all the other nakhla and mizo i smoke with 3 coals smokes just fine and i still get 2 full rounds of coals (place them in a triangle formation)

im using a AF medium, Narb hose, Tang small bowl. now a though i was having is that whenever we smoke nak and mizo and pack it down tight in the phunnel, the shisha expands back up once the heat is put on it (from the coals). with mizo grape, its very wet compared to the rest and it also has that stupid dye on it, i think that could be contributing to the almost "burnt" taste im getting.

what i think i will try in my next few sessions of mizo grape to try and solve this are:

1) not as much tobacoo in the bowl, less packed compared to how i usually smoke nak and mizo
2) 4-5 half pieces of coals instead of the 3 full pieces i use
3) maybe try HD foil or 2 pieces of regular foil (although i find i never get as much smoke since theres more foil when its double wrapped)

any thoughts/suggestions?

jesus christ, 3 ch nats? Yeah it probably tastes like god damn burning firewood... :bad:

Mizo is gentle, with phunnels it barely needs 2 coals. At times it can smoke with a tingle.

By no means does mizo need to be smashed in the bowl like Tangiers. The recipe is different, it will not smoke like tangiers tobacco. I like to make sure it's fairly tightly packed, but not smashed or pressed in or anything like that. I have found that if you don't mix Mizo up before you smoke to get it juicy again it will smoke harsh and offensively.

I would pack it in fairly tight but not smashed - pack it as far as it will go without having to smash it down to keep it below the rim, use 2 whole CH nats or cut them in half - if you use wholes put them right across from each other on the bowl and if you 1/2 them use them at 12,3,6,9 o'clock on the bowl.

This! Even though you said you use that amount with the other mizos, that just seems like too much. Sounds like you might be overpacking some as well. I'd pack a little less in the bowl and try 2 coals and maybe a windcover.

I was just smoking Mizo Grape last night and had no problems.

I agree with the pack style that hippo suggests. Since it's wetter than most other Nakhla, you pack it loser but with an even consistency. I overpack all of my bowls just slightly and have no problems.

With coals, I always use three CH Nats. Keep in mind, generally the tighter the pack, the more heat it requires. That's part of the reason I overpack. If it starts to get hot with three, pull one off. But I always START every small phunnel with three coals. IMO, light smoke can taste and tickle worse than one burning hot - especially with Nakhla.

One Mizo flavor I could not nail down was the Apricot. It got that burned taste very easily, and even whein it was smoking well it tasted terrible. I don't even know what to compare it to, but it was bad.

Good luck with the grape. Try what we've suggested and post how it went. :)

really. I remember when it first came out. A member sent me some because it had a funky smell way beyond the AF Grape smell.

Smoked great. Bought my own smoked great. 4-5 half coals on a Hemi Bowl... DIVINE!

i think it smells better than it smokes, it doesn't smoke "burnt" but i do use 3 ch ql's or 4 ch nats, i think it's time to cut back on the coals, maybe even use a wind cover which i never do, but it could be too much heat. i just smoked this an hour ago and last night, need to try again with less heat as it smells great.

the mizo grape i got smelled horrible when i opened i. then i acclimated it for a while, and it smelled slightly less horrible. at one point i was out of shisha so i smoked it, and it tasted like burning.

about half a year after that i smoked it again because i was out of shisha, and it had gone from smelling terrible to smelling like nothing. i smoked it and it tasted like nothing too..

Personally ive never smoked mizo grape, but i have tried every other mizo flavor and i cram it into my small phunnel to where its right below the rim and i throw 3 ch nats on it and i never touch it after that. Smokes fine, nice fluffy clouds, no burnt taste. When i go to the second round of coals i put them opposite to the last set. Never has this been a problem for me......maybe ill have to get some mizo grape and find out.

Edit: .forgot to add that i acclimate everything that i smoke regardless of what is, so maybe try a little acclimation and see if that helps.

your right, let me fix it so its more interesting

the mizo grape i got smelled horrible when i opened it. then i fought a dragon, and it smelled slightly less horrible. after fighting the dragon i found lots of hookahs and coals in his cave, but only mizo grape shisha...the dragon magically came back to life and light up some coals and we smoked. and of course the mizo grape tasted horrible

about half a year after this is a story all about how my life got flipped-turned upside down and i liked to take a minute and sit right there and tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel Air. In west Philadelphia born and raised on the playground was where i spent most of my days chillin out maxin relaxin all cool and all shootin some b-ball outside of the school when a couple of guys who were up to no good startin makin trouble in my neighborhood. I got in one lil fight and my mom got scared she said, "your movin with your auntie and uncle in bel Air" I begged and pleaded with her day after day but she packed my suitcase and sent me on my way she gave me a kiss and then she gave me my ticket so i put my walkman on and said i might as well kick it.
I whistled for a cab and when it came near the licensplate said fresh and had a dice in the mirror if anything I could say that this cab was rare. But I thought now forget it, yo home to bel-air.

I pulled up to a house about seven or eight and I yelled to the cabby yo, home smell you later looked at my kingdom I was finally there to settle my throne as the prince of bel-air. and then i smoked it again. it smelled/tasted like nothing. Edited by K1024

tried it again tonight

1) less packed. under the rim for sure and i did not pack as much or pack as tightly
2) 4 half CH nats with a windcover

results:

almost the same. biggest difference i noticed was the fact that i was obviously getting less clouds than when i normally use my 3 nats, flavor was similar and i did notice that when i put my second set of coals on i got slightly less flavor (my assumption is because the 4 half pieces take up a larger surface area and burn the top part of the shisha).

i can note that mizo grape did taste very good before when i mixed it with mint and on another occasion with gum, maybe the mint flavor masks the "burnt" or weird taste i notice.

just pack it down real hard in the phunnel, double wrap the foil, use toothpick to poke three rings, one on the outside rim, one in the middle, and one in the inside right next to the center hole. be suer to push all the way to the bottom of the bowl. 3 CH naturals do it right every time.

so youre suggesting a very tight pack lets say more than the usually OG nak or mizo would be packed?

Anyways did you try any acclimation?
[/quote]

nope, none. just opened the tubs and packed it up. although it took us two bowls to get right cus it was our first phunnel experience.
