EireBrode
As of late, I've been getting into some semi-local bands from Seattle, and the ones I've discovered were truly fantastic. They may have a niche appeal though. Recently, I've been really into an indie-folk band called Fleet Foxes. If you have any interest in them, I'd recommend the songs "He Doesn't Know Why" and "Mykonos." They had won several Best band and Best album of 2008. They're also very similar to A Band Of Horses, though I haven't heard much of them. Or, if you're into the more punk scene, there's GG Allin, one of the most bat-shit crazy punk rockers in history. There's also GISM, another punk band I'd like to hear more of. Or, if you're more into the Black Metal scene, there's the band Mayhem. Thrash metal? There's Dying Fetus. I have a pretty diverse taste You guys know of any other obscure bands worth checking out? Click
Check out Volbeat. It's like heavy metal/folk rock/indie/franz ferdinand-like. Yea, I dunno wtf to consider them, but I like all of there songs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pV7aM32Jur8

Jeff_T
I wouldn't say Fleet Foxes is obscure, but they are good. And August Burns Red, imo, is very, very "neat". My gf really likes this Tacoma band, Roman Holiday. To me they sound kinda like Kings of Leon. I don't know that I know of anything obscure, but I can say some very solid albums this past year were, ETID - New Junk Asthetic, Oh, Sleeper - Sons of the Morning, Poison the Well - The Tropic Rot, Brand New - Daisy, Cursive - Mama, I'm Swollen, Sondre Lerche - Heartbeat Radio. There are a lot more, but I'm to tired to list them all.

Christofonopolis
If you like fleet foxes check out Iron & Wine, and also Mogwai is very interesting (all instrumental which is hard for some people to get over) and I just got introduced to a band called Cursive (The Ugly Organ album) which I highly recommend.
I find it hard to believe you just heard about Cursive, because they are one of my fav. bands. They aren't huge, so it's understandable, but I think I got into them in like 2002 and feel like everyone should have heard them because they are so good. You should def check out the rest of their discography. Burst and Bloom an early Cursive release and Domestica are my favorites, I think. Mama, I'm Swollen (that was released in 2009) is also quite good, but I thought The Ugly Organ was better. It's a solid album throughout. I'm just glad to hear you're into them. Also, my gf is taking me to see them the day after my bday, I'm so stoked. The first time I saw them, probably like 6-7 years ago they were great so I can't wait to see how they've progressed.
