If it doesn't have to be from a specific city...and you like Hip-Hop...Immortal Technique.

If it can be from any time, and you like 60s, I would suggest the 13th Floor Elevators, The Moving Sidewalks, The Chocolate Watch Band, Golden Dawn, The Red Krayolas, 50' Hose, The Velvett Fogg, and Rabbit McKay and the Somis Rhythm Band (Not available on CD though...)
+1 to Immortal Technique, very good. I'll have to check out those bands , Eric. Also, for a newer band, try out Ataxia, very good smoking music.

I always get blank stares when I mention Soul Coughing. So I would consider them obscure for that reason.

"Soul Coughing was a New York-based alternative rock band. The band found modest mainstream success during the mid-to-late 90's. Soul Coughing developed a devout fanbase and have garnered largely positive response from critics. Steve Huey describes the band as "one of the most unique cult bands of the '90s ... driven by frontman M. I don't know about obscure, but definitely check these out if you're not familiar..

CAN - great 70s krautrock band, eclectic sound. Been listening to them a lot.

Mothers of Invention - I'm sure some of you have heard of Zappa, but for those that don't.. this is his first real group and they're odd, fun, funny, great musicians and feature a variety of instruments.

Osmosis - one of the pioneers of the fusion genre, couldn't find anything on youtube.

 • 4 weeks later...
RQTN is really good, also listen to Marc Codsi, EZ3kiel, Of Porcelain, ダウニ (downy), Beyond the Dune Sea, or Trico!.

In general, the best place to discover odd music is http://www.thesirenssound.com/ everything there is virtually unknown

Mathrock? Dammit genres are getting way too obscure. Not having heard of it I just picture someone furiously doing math problems while rocking out. Also, hipsters suck, usually.
If you're into good indie music check out john vanderslice. He was around before all the fixies and plaid.

Hmmmm Billy Talent, and Daniel Westley, those 2 are very very very different but amazing.
Mika is very very famous, but generally not that well known here in the USA
I'm lucky, I get the Victoria BC radio stations so I get to listen to a lot of rock/alternative/metal bands before they become famous.
And lots of bands that are famous in canada or europe but not famous in the USA. Edited by bellydancerakn
