Don't be afraid to really hit it. The more force you use the cleaner the cut, I have found. Scoring first is not necessary (except for Exoticas, I found they always cut uneven if you don't score first). Enjoy.

Seriously this is amazing just put the coal in and squeeze clean cuts with zero mess. Works on ANY coal. Even cocos

I light them up, put them in the coal carrier and use the metal stick on my tongs to hit it once in the middle and it splits perfect every time. Also if it doest split first time it usually means the coals are not properly lit.. I hate trying to cut them its so difficult.

How much does whacking your knife with a hammer screw up your knife?

I just went through and cut a half a box of cocos, knife seems fine so far.

Just use an old knife if you're worried about it.

I do something similar to Incubusratm's method, but I don't usually have a hammer around in the kitchen. I just use a butter knife and a can opener, though one of the more hefty can openers. I don't score the coals at all, unless exoticas. I just place the butter knife on the coco and whack it with the flat edge of the can opener, and the coco splits just fine. Another plus is that you don't have to worry about dulling the butter knife because, well it's a butter knife. When I get some spare time, I intend on making a small guillotine type device with a weight on it, which will be devoted to splitting coals.

Yeah, any heavy/blunt object will work for striking the knife. The steak knife I use is one I do not care about... Guess I should've mentioned that in my original post- do NOT use a good knife that you care about. Anyways, when you get your coal-splitting device up and running, post pics of it on here!

For those of you with out a hammer you can always use a shoe (inspired by ryno)

I just score with screwdriver, place screwdriver in grove, smack with heel of shoe
Yes the shoe works great!

Really good if your a chick and have high heels. Lot more weight behind it. This also why high heels are always awesome for a spare hammer when it's too cold to venture outside to the garage to get the toolbox.

But just a disclaimer here boys... DO NOT USE YOUR GIRLFRIEND'S/WIFE'S HIGH HEELS WITHOUT ASKING HER FIRST!!!!
Damn good way to wind up dead, impotent, or severly scarred (mentally or physically), or a combo of all three.

I have this sculpture tool that I no longer need that I use - it's not sharp, but has an edge. I'm not sure what it's called, but it's for mold-making... I just press that down into the coal a little bit to kind of score it, and then whack with a hammer. Works beautifully.

Sorry for crappy Photo Booth quality images, but here's what I'm talking about:
It's about 9" long total; blade is 4". Pointy tip.

The curved (hammering) edge - it's wide enough to make good contact with a hammer. :) You can see little dents in mine from it...

Flat (cutting) edge - this edge isn't very sharp (though I wouldn't run it along my arm, for instance..), but it's quite thin.
