How Exactly Do You Cut A 3 Kings Coal In 1/2?

Recommended Posts

With your hands... both thumbs on top meeting at the middle. three fingers from each hand on the bottom meeting at the middle, push down with your thumbs while hold it with the other six fingers. That's the best I can describe my method.

i honestly always thought it was easier to break a 3 kings after it was already lit. light the coal then after its lit use your tongs to push down on the middle of the coal. if it doesnt break into halves it usuallly breaks int 3 pieces

Forgot to mention that no matter which way you do it your going to get alot of coal dust.

I currently have to use 3k (hopefully ending my dry spell tomorrow if ups would get here) and i usually do it with my hands.....sometimes you get halves, sometimes you get thirds.

Is it like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get?

score it first with a serrated knife or tongs then snap in two with both hands as described above.

I gave up on trying to split a 3K flawlessly. The stuff is made to brittle and even when packaged, has coal dust all over the place. I just stopped bothering with it and went with AF coals instead ; are much harder and way less likely to crumble apart.
That's what I do, do the same for my CH coals too.

Once they are lit they are much easier to break.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention Stuie. You posted about the handicut a while back and I went out and got one a few months ago. I use it for my coconaras and it works awesome!!!!!!!!!

But for 3K i use a nail right on top of the dome part of the coal and hammer it lightly in until it cracks. It will either crack into halves or thirds.
