thatonethere
Lately, I've been smoking hookah on average about 6 times a week (about 2 bowls on thursday, 2 on friday, 1 on sat and 1 on sunday). I also smoke cigs (about 2 per day). I noticed my chest had gotten really heavy, and tight, so I stopped smoking cigs and I only smoke hookah on thursday - sunday because I thought the chest issues might have to do with me smoking cigs. But then again, I thought I might be smoking rust. I'm a hygenic hookah smoker, and I know how to take care of my hookah, but it seems like rust might be inevitable. Anyway, here's why I think it might be rust related: When I'm done smoking, I usually hang up my hoses. One time, I went to set up my hookah, and there was some yellow/brownish (the color of Mizo lemon juice) liquid on the mouth piece of the hookah. I checked my other hose to see if any liquid had come out of it. There was evidence of brownish liquid that came out of that hose as well. At first, I didn't think rust was the case because I own a 3 hose 31"KM Trimetal w/ purge valve so the stem is plenty long enough for water to not get into my hoses. Could my chest isues be due to smoking rust, or smoking cigs and hookah ? In the mean time, I plan on taking something to clear my lungs out, and avoiding cigs. Part of me wants to say that the chest issue started when I started smoking cigs more. I like hookah and I don't want to have to stop doing it. Another question I want to ask is, "Could purging the stale smoke cause condensation to accumulate in my hoses?" I don't want to tear apart my hose only to find out that I don't have any rust in it, so is there a way to make sure I don't have rust in my hose without destroying it? I hope this wasn't too incoherent, I'm tired, it's late and I'm at work.
rhineholt
i don't think the rust could do anything harmful unless its taken in large quantities, which it might be for you... one thing you could do now, if your hose already has rust in it, run water through it before every session to wash out the rust that built up in there. the hose is already shot, so why not use it to it's fullest? Good luck. Hope everything clears up for you.
Canon
rust is inevitable with most hookah hoses. ive had hoses come in with rust already in them. there are 2 safe alternatives to the rust issue. you can buy a nammor or razzan hose or you can break apart your current hose and get plastic tubing from either wal mart, aquarium hoses work well which is what i use or you can get a hose from home depot. i suggest making your own hose, use the tips from your current hose if you decide to break it apart to get the right sized hose. joytron
As far as the tightness in your chest (I am not a medical doctor) but you might have asthma, which I would def. go get checked out.
K1024
if your hoses are rusted youll notice chuncks of rust coming out of the hose and into your mouth. if your hose is rusted out you would definitely have noticed it by now.
Webbles
This is a prime example as to why i am anal when it comes to hoses. (not Anal hoses, thats another forum). Spending a little extra for a nammor or a narbish, something you can wash weekly can eliminate so many things such as ghosting, fear of rust & just general cleanliness. But anyways, If ya fill up yer base with to much water, ya might have gotten some splash up the hose. Im guessing its probably splash back that has gotten in the hose, and of course the tar from the smoke discoloring the water giving it that ugly hue. Its happened to me a long time ago, hence the 5 washable hoses in my armory.
Webbles
Its hard to tell if its rust or just tainted water. When ya rub it between your fingers, do ya feel any grainy-ness to it? If ya smell it, aside from the shisha smell, any metal hint to it?

Its bitter, and has a shisha taste to it, no metal hint at all.

[/quote] no that isnt rust and it happens to me when my hoses arent clean, what i think it is is when the smoke comes through the hose some of the vapor stick to the hose and it condenses into a liquid hence it tastes like shisha and has a weird hue to it try blowing out your hose before and after use to help since its non- washable

I ask because I do that sometimes, but wouldn't the blown air condense on the inside of the hose anyway? Screw it, I'm going to start using washable hoses exclusively. I've made some hoses out of vinyl tubing and old hose pieces, but I do like the look of the hoses that came with my hookah. Oh well, I guess it's a small price to pay when you don't want to smoke rust. Maybe I'll just invest in some good looking washables.
Codename067
Just be careful...rust is the worst thing that could happen to your hookah..nothing to mess around with. Lots of good suggestions here in this thread, so I say follow some of them and you should be on a path of rust-free hookah/hoses!
Sonthert
Dirty hoses from high water content hoses will sometimes have dirty, bitter water come up to the tip. Get a new hose... Rust otherwise is fairly safe. Especially good if you have a low iron content in your diet. Nasty and metallic, but safe.
thatonethere
Update: I went to the doctor, and it turns out that I have bronchitis. I'll have to put the hookah down and take a break. Until then, I'll get some more coals from HJ and I've made some washable hoses that look exactly like this (see second pic) http://www.hookahforum.com/topic/27521-homemade-hose/ The pull is decent, but I'll have to put electrical tape around the mouthpiece, and the hose port to eliminate air leaks. I'm really thinking about purchasing the Mya QT package (Royal Blue) from HJ for camping purposes. We'll see what happens.
