Burning Shisha Help... :(

Recommended Posts

Alright, well I'm in progress of upgrading my hookah :P and so I got myself a vortex bowl. I also bought some AF plum, and AF Lemon (my mom wanted lemon). I've gotten one good smoke from each, but the rest of the times I've tried it has been harsh/no good flavor.

Setup -
17" Egyptian Scarab
1 hose
Ice water filled about 2" above the stem
Vortex bowl with AF plum or lemon
1 QL coal with makeshift windcover

I pack the AF to right below the holes in the spire and make sure that its a fluffy pack. I'll put my coal on, then my makeshift windcover and let it bake for about....5 minutes. When it gets harsh (just a few minutes after pulling from the hose) it gets harsh, hurts the throat etc. I'll take of the windcover, no good, I'll remove the coal let it cool down a bit no good, I'll look at the shisha it's not burnt what-so-ever so...I'm at a loss....any suggestions?

Thanks :)

i would say try packing more shisha into the bowl that is almost always the problem, personally when i pack a vortex i pack it tight up to the holes then pack it light until shisha is level with the tower. that is just my opinion though andd ive never smoked af like that so im not to sure

Well first off thats too much water. Just try regular water about 1/2" above the stem. Cut the coal in half, put both halves at opposite ends and get rid of the windcover. If its burning really quick you need more tobacco, try adding more if it persists.

Just got done smoking some AF cinnamon in my vortex.my set up is QT. Packed the bowl right to the top.semi-fluffy not sprinkled. 2 qls 33mm broke in half. 3 pieces in a triangle. one piece waiting to be lit. no wind screen. never gets harsh and lasts about 1.5 hours.

Alright, well I just got back from smoking my hookah again, and once again, harsh smoke. :( I've tried all the suggestions, broke the coal in half, semi-packed it but not too much, had the coals opposite of each other. Not much smoke, and the smoke was harsh. I also noticed that everytime I take off the foil and it's been harsh there has been ash in the bowl. The shisha never actually burns..this has got me so confused...

so to recap...
when its harsh, i find ash in the bow
barely any smoke
1/2" of water above my stem
1 QL (holland) split in half opposite of each other on the bowl
semi-packed AF lemon
2 layers of foil poked wholes with a seamstress needle

anyone else have some suggestions? :(

Sooner I get it started, the sooner I get to enjoy shisha to its fullest :D

Thanks for all your input guys!

Make sure you use a lot of holes if you're using a sewing needle or just switch to a tooth pick to poke. You need good air flow, not barely any airflow. Light up another half so you have a total of 3 halves on the bowl. if that doesn't work take a half off, if its still harsh add more tobacco. Get rid of the two layers of foil, just use one.

Trust me ditch the vortex for whatever egyptian bowl that came with your hookah...break up the AF and sprinkle it on the bowl untill its about 1/2 inch over the top of the rim of the bowl...squish down the tobacco with the foil poke about 20 tooth pick holes in it...use 1 QL coal if its the larger 40mm ones and 2 if its the 33mm ones and windcover to adjust the heat.
