fcbayern
So I figured I would poll my favorite forum on the web. I have never snowboarded before and I'd like to learn. I'm going to Germany/Austria soon and I'm planning on hitting the slopes there. I do skate and wakeboard pretty often so I have plenty of background. I have seen a few videos on how to learn to SB and I was wondering if you think this is something I can do on my own, or should I get lessons? Thanks
RingsMaster
the only difference ive noticed from wakeboarding is the turning and weight distribution on your feet. honestly i learned on my own in a few hours. just to get going straight and carving, it took me a little while to get pretty good on the slopes but its not impossible to teach yourself. fineout
id say get a day of lessons and just learn to get around and then if you go again then just go on your own...i used to say get some friends to teach you but being on the giving side of that, the novelty really wears off especially when its so expensive to snowboard these days. Arcane
really depends on how long you'll have on the mountain... if it's 4 hours for a couple of days....skip the lessons. also, if you're naturally well coordinated, skip the lessons. unless you have a bad balance or are terribly uncoordinated, i'd skip lessons. the first day, it took me about an hour to learn to stay on my edges and then another hour to make it down the greens without falling. another hour to carve....and that left me an hour enjoy myself. i'm gonna disagree with fineout and say, if you have friends that know the fundamentals of snowboarding...its better just to have them give you pointers or tell you what you're doing wrong. i find that the people giving you lessons, don't so much as teach you how to ride...but, teach you how not to eat snow... liquidglass
If you're already skateboarding and wakeboarding I think you'll be fine, it'll just take you a bit to adjust to the circumstances. Snowboarding is nothing like skiing, and since there's only one real "added part" rather than 4 it's much easier to learn on your own. Stopping might be your only issue (like it was mine) I took out some skiiers on the way.....totally worth it.
fcbayern
Thanks guys, good to see I can still count on my good friends here on HF (even if I havnt been around for a minute) I will not be going with anyone who know how to snowboard (going with some die hard skiers) so i will have no help there. I might get a private lesson ( I was looking and its no that much more than a group) so i can progress at my own pace.. I cant wait.. Snowboard all day, smoke hookah and drink weissbier all night, rinse and repeat

A13lackFish
you should be real capable at doing snowboarding, ive skated, wakeboarded, surfed, and other than the climate change its pretty much the same. Just start slow with some greens before you throw yourself into the backcountry or super pipes. enjoy bro
joytron
It is pretty easy, just dont be afraid of trusting your rails and going fast. For me it really depends on if you get great snow or not, in powder you steer off your back foot if not you are steering off your front. I would skip the lessons as most of the time its kids and chicks, i know i sent my girl in one, she was the worst student of the day. I am sure it will move to slow for you and you will end of feeling like you are wasting time and money.
Amn_sinclair
i would say skip the lessons i learned to snowboard on my own and i thought it was awesome. your gonna eat a lot of snow but thats part of learning... when i first started the harderst part for me was getting on the lifts lol i fell trying to get on those once or twice. and getting off to that can be tricky sometimes lol. other then that just get yourself on the bunny hill for a few runs and figure out whats up then go for the fun stuff. when exactly you going? ive been wanting to go snowboarding in austria
A13lackFish
yeah i forgot to add, lessons tend to be a giant waste of money and time. They will only teach you the basics of stopping, and minor turning, things you could basically do on any old bunny hill by yourself:post-5619-1201289386: also if its going to be a big mountain get a helmet, its a necessity for a first time!
