Scott
So, I've got a gas burner, and I've got 108 CH natty coals coming. Can I use my gas stove to light these, or is it a pain in the ass? Should I just purchase a single coil burner from Walgreens?
momatik
If you have a normal stove top and not glass, then you most certainly can. I use a really old spatula. I put the coals on that over the burner. The spatula gets super hot, and the slits in it allow for the flame to make direct contact.
rhineholt
Meh, I'd get a coil burner. It works better.

Hassouni
gas burner works fine for me, though it's best if you have a small grill you can place right over the flame as a platform for the coals...I always found a coil burner is a bit uneven
PSU Smoker
when I lived in my fraternity we had gas and light all our coals in it with out a problem. Just get some salad tongs stick the coal in the flame and turn it after ~40 seconds
Stuie
I have used the propane stove on my grill to light coals. I think the walgreens coil burner works better.
nars2k
I use to use my stove but it took longer to light the coals than the coil burner.

Jeff_T
I used the gas stove when I lived in a house 2 years back and it worked fine. I never put anything on top of the burner grates and they got a little weird, had to do some hard scrubbing to get them clean, but it wasn't bad. I felt that it lit my coals in about the same time it takes my electric coil burner (I believe I was lighting exoticas or cocos). I'd probably just go with one of the portable single coil burners so you don't have to worry about messing up the whole stove and it's only like $10 to pick one up at Walgreens. ih303
I'm really surprised there is not a better way to light coals. I think I'm going to create a thread.
