Joel
Hey everyone, I've been looking for tutorials on how to pack Tangiers and found a ton of them, but many point me in different directions. I know I need to pack more than other shishas, and poke more holes, but some say to pack above the rim and push down, while others say to pack above and leave it. Both claim the other method will give you harsh smoke. What do you guys do?
r1v3th3ad
I like fluffy packed bowls close to the top...I use an oyster fork to make three rings of holes around the outside, not poking any holes in the center where the hole is
Travis
According to Eric your supposed to pack it so that it is about the same density in the bowl that it is in the package when it is still sealed. I usually just do the scoop method......Large shallow container.....grab bowl and scoop some into it (like you were scooping ice cream), Then i push it down to make it even with the height of the center hole....foil and poke holes around the phunnel, not over it. Then 4 ch coals standing at attention in a square pattern and the bowl will last me at least 4 hrs. (Joe and Dr.B can vouge for me, I had a bowl of static starlight goin for around 4 hrs before i had to call it quits cause i had to go to work) Forgot to mention that this is with a small phunnel, but ive used the same method with my large and ended up with the same result.......good, long, thick session) <---yeah i know But like rivet said above he fluffs his and gets the same results, i think its just a matter of preference. Try a few methods out and find what works best for you........
Whats a KM?
if your new to tangiers follow those tutorials. the best advice i can give is start with little heat, slowly adding more overtime till you hit a good volume of smoke with no harshness. It took me about 8 bowls to really key in on my own technique, perseverance is the key. stick with it and youll get it.

bigtoepfer
That vid on youtube seemed really good until i saw eric start poking holes in the center then i didn't understand. Because I'm under the impression that holes in the center is a nono.
hookah hippie
yes the video is on youtube something like tangiers packing search for that I prefer the scoop method with lots of holes with smaller ones over the phunell
i don't think holes in the center makes much of a difference, but it definitely is NOT a bad thing. from what i vaguely recollect Eric saying, the holes in the middle resist the tobacco from burning when you don't take pulls for quite a while....errrr, or something like that. r1v3th3ad
my buddy packed some k-peach a few weeks ago in my medium phunnel...he is not familiar with phunnels...he put a million holes all over and it wasnt getting any pull
Joel
My question is, does the shisha not get scorched when it touches the foil? It seems to me that it would become harsh. :/
Webbles
Every bowl i pack, the foil is touching the shisha and it rarely tastes burnt. Its not so much the tobacco touching the foil that gives it a harsh smoke, its having TO MUCH heat on a bowl that will burn it more.
Yea, although the tobacco will burn from touching the top of the foil it wont really effect the flavor as much as it will from the ceramic bowl heating up too much. And do as everyone else said, just pack it in tight till you are upto the hole in the middle. Than just be careful with the amount of coals that you throw onto the bowl. MrMoodz
I like to use small or mini phunnel bowls for Tangiers and I pack it pretty tight. Then I use 3 or 4 coconara halves and then keep the bowl going with golden canary coals.
aethiolas
I just put in my first order for OG tangiers on Sunday from HJ and I'm waiting on pins and needles. Have to say, I'm a bit scared...just too many bad things. I ordered horchata, orange soda and spearmint. Any of those 3 easier to start off with? dizzbizz
I pack as closely as I can to HJ's video but I don't poke as many holes as Eric. I put 20 on the outside rim, 10 on the middle and 6 on the inside.
Orange Soda seems to be an "easy" Tangiers, even for those who typically hate the unwashed (some of my friends just can't smoke it). Horchata I've found batches are different. Some are more cinnamon spiced, others are more Horchata cream / spiced, etc. Noir and Lucid. Follow the Eric / John tutorial, its the most consistent way. Many times I've just scooped it up post-stir with the phunnel, slammed it in with a fork / palm to below the rim and enjoyed. Typed out from my blog:
fuck that U.S crap! Tangiers blows man, i feel like im smoking moldy ass fruit! al fakher naklha layalina #1. Once you go imports ya neva go to dat crappy shit called tangiers Reply: Your nickname speaks volumes Al Fakher is a damn good shisha, just filled with some nice food coloring A few scenarios with Tangiers. 1) The flavor is off: you packed it wrong or their is too much heat 2) The flavor is off: not acclimated 3) The flavor is on, but no smoke: not enough heat, or too much heat and poor packing 4) The flavor is on, their is smoke, and its killing me: Tangier's may not be for you, may wanna try the washed version of Lucid, which is much lighter. Some people never acclimate to OG / Noir / the non-washed heavy stuff. No one shisha is "better" its all perception and taste. Tangiers is my favorite, even if now I don't smoke Noir / unwashed as much, as you need to smoke more of it. Tangier's does have the most diverse flavors: Blue Gum Ball, Horchata, Orange Soda (oh my that stuff is good, and one of the better Noir's), such staying power with multiple rounds, which I now don't do much, as multiple flavors is more rewarding.
