For Any Of You Jazz People

Whats a KM?

Recommended Posts

Im in a jazz history class as a part of my ge so i can graduate next year and ive been kinda forced into the scene. Ive been a metal/hardcore/fusion fan pretty much all my life, and i have to say some of the musicians ive been listening to have been absolutely insane. Im currently doing my project on Art Tatum and more specifically his rendition of tiger rag. I was curious for you jazz people on the forum who your favorites are.

Not up on my jazz as much as I wish, but Ornette Coleman's "The Shape of Jazz to Come" (1959) is a landmark recording. Largely responsible for the birth of the avante-garde jazz movement, yet still very accessible to my ears. That's all I've been listening to in the car recently.

Billy Harper's "Black Saint" (1975). 3 long tracks that hit me in the face.

Miles Davis is great! Check out Kind of Blue, and Sketches of Spain.

Yeah man, those are great albums. They never get old. His rendition of Rodrigo's Adagio on the latter is sweet.

The only other album of his I know is Birth of the Cool. It's earlier, I think '48 or '49. Definitely an older sound obviously since it's earlier in his career, but quite a very important recording.

John Coltrane's Blue Train is another timeless recording.
