My Coco'S Are Different!

Recommended Posts

I just opened up a new box of coco's I got, and it seems like they have changed their shape. They are now thicker cubes than the flatter squares. This has created a nightmare for cutting them in half! I have went through about 10 pieces and stopped because I can't get an even cut on a single on of them. They are all cut 1/3rd sliced off with 2/3rd, making the 1/3rd sized slice almost useless. I feel like there is more actual coal there, which is good, but the greater thickness is making it impossible to cut. Am I alone here? Is there a better way?

This new shape removes any need for cutting them IMO. Then again cutting the coals just became a hassle for me anyways recently and have just adjusted my bowl packing and heat management techniques to be able to handle the extra heat.

I got one of thier new boxes, haven't opened it. Darn on the size. But oh well I can still give it a whirl with my Craftsman Handi-Cut!

That's strange because my box of cocoas has both the cubes and squares. I was under the impression that cocoas are like that. I guess I was wrong. I tried cutting my cocos, and yes they are hard to cut. I just ended up standing them up on the thinner side.

All of my new boxes has both sqaures and flatter pieces. Just score it with a knife, take some heavy duty metal scissors or sheers if you will, put it over the score, and with the easiest bit of squeezing they crack perfectly in half, every time!

Goodluck!

The handi cut will work but you should try scoring it first. I've chopped a few of them without scoring and they require much more effort.

score the coal, take a flathead screwdriver and put it on the score line, hit with 5lb mini sledge, two halves of a coco brick

You dont have to hit the coal as hard so you dont send those halves flying!

Maybe it's just my batch. I've been cracking cocos for a year without a problem... But I can't for the life of me get an equal cut with these perfect cubes! Maybe I'll try not cutting them since the average surface area is slightly smaller than the thinner cocos. Oh and my entire box is filled with cubes... There is t a thinner or wider side, it's a perfect square on each side of the coal.

I've found the best way to cut these is to score the whole way around using a serrated "ginzu" type steak knife and then placing the knife on one of the grooves and giving it a gentle but solid tap on the top of the blade with a small hammer. Works every time.
