Exotica Japanese Silver Coals

Recommended Posts

I just bought a 96 pack from amazon, and tried em out just a little over half an hour ago. I must say I'm not pleased, but I know I must be doing something wrong. I have always used regular kings, but decided to try another market.

I put them on the stove (2), waited about 4-5 mins, and it lit fine. It took a few puffs to start up, not a problem, but it had a real ashy taste I didn't enjoy. I'm guessing its the left over silver coating on the coals. Should I completely shave it off next time and make it so its completely lit red before putting it on. Any tips?

I used to use em all the time, we'd just put em on the stove for 1min per side and throw em on the hookah. Some of the silver would still be on and some had flaked off, i personally never noticed much a flavor difference.

Still trying to get my Japs to light well. Got a hot plate as suggested by someone, and I am not having any better luck.

um, you put them on, turn it to high, wait till the paint flakes off on its own. whats the problem? :)

The Golden Canaries and Exotic Japs and every other jap I try, starts splitting in half before the half the paint flakes off.

Think I am going to get my alcohol stove like Scalli made back up and running. Just got to put in the check valve and I'm golden.

Stuie, mine crack all the time. Sometimes in half, sometimes just chips.

When i blast my hotplate on high and cook up my golden canaries they usually chip or crack. BUT, when i heat up my GC on top of pre-lit GC then they are perfect without cracking.

That lead me to a breakthru. If you cook your jap coals on medium-hot; If 1 to 10 and 10 being HI, set it to 7. Ive noticed it takes a little bit longer to light, but they dont break or chip.

Give that a try.

Do you flip them or just leave them alone?

Nope i dont flip them. I put them on my hotplate at medium hot and keep them on there till they just about are glowing red. I twirl my coal basket or a blow on the coal and most of the silver flint comes off.

Mind ya tho, this is based on Golden Canaries. If i was trying the Exoticas or even the Easy lights i would wait till they GLOW red and ALL the flint comes off.

I think I'm just going to stick with kings for now on, 13bedar is coming up, and theres no place to "cook" these outside, I need some actual easy lites.

jap coals i had were in a differnent box but same basic principal. Also CH QL are very nice imo, i split all mine in half with a screwdriver and shoe (thanks ryno!). they take a little more time and heat to light than 3k, but can still be accomplished with a lighter. 8.50 for a box of 48 of em from HJ or like 15 bucks for a kilo of em

I had a box of those Exotica japs a while back and wasn't impressed with them. I felt they didn't last long enough, but maybe it's because I'm used to CH/cocos... I've never had a prob with mine cracking though. I would throw them on the coil burner for about 3-4min a side and they'd be glowing red with no silver coating left.

its not you, OP...it's those coals....

they're not that great and i think they do impart a tiny bit of flavor....just try to get through them and switch to GCs or coconuts...

Id like to scratch what I said about the Easy Lite Japs not being that bad....they are that bad haha. I used to use them all the time and for three weeks have been using only CH Nats. I threw one on a bowl today and could really taste it. I never knew that the taste was even there till I started using better coals.

I don't think I've never experienced a Japanese coal crack on me while I was lighting it. I just treat them like any other coal - throw it on the burner and flip after a few minutes. The only difference is I blow off all the silver crap once it's fully lit. That paint or whatever it is will make you sick if you keep it intact when you smoke.

I've never been a fan of Japanese coals. They make too much of a mess, don't last that long, and don't seem to burn hot enough for my liking.
