persianprez
Ok, so I did it very proper last night. I heated it for a few mins on each side, took it off the coil, put it on some foil and shaved off the remaining silver, put it back on the coil, let it become completely red, and it smoked fine. Now, this whole process took about 10 mins, which is no problem for some people, but I like to smoke while I study and hate waiting. I don't know why you guys go through all this trouble when regular coals light literally instantly and last about 20-30 mins.

bobbo21
Does anybody have any proof/validation that you're supposed to take the silver lining off? My coals don't crack or taste bad, and I think the silver lining holds the coal together and makes them last longer...
That silver "paint" is there to help the coals light, chances are if its not completely removed when you take them off of the burner, they arent completely lit. bobbo21
Well I'm not trying to be an ass here, but I assure you they're completely lit. The lining doesn't flake off very easily on mine. It's not until they start to ash considerably that it starts to fall off.
start the coals BEFORE you do anything else....with GCs or Exotica Japs, they'll be done by the time you're completely set up...unless you can magically set up a hookah in 3 minutes or so... on a nakhla session (where i could care less how i pack my bowl), it takes me about 6 minutes to fully set up. that's picking out a hookah, rinsing it, packing the bowl, poking my holes, putting everything together, placing it in my living room, grabbing a beer, and choosing/connecting the hose. after all that, my coals are ready and i'm smoking... also, i'm not sure what "regular coals" are...but, if you're taking about coconuts....there's nothing instant about lighting them. if you're talking about QLs, then i'd pick better "regular" coals... persianprez
By "regular coals" I mean coals like 3 kings 1 is good for about half an hour, you blow off the ashes and put another one on. And they light in about 10 seconds..
TexasHookah
Personally I use the Exotica Easy Lite quite often. They are good coals and last longer than quicklites. I use a regular stove and light them on one side for 1-1.5 minutes and turn them around and do the same thing. And then I just blow on them until all or most of the silver is gone. Then place them on the bowl. I use two pieces usually. Hope that helps.
