acolorado
I just figured this out when smoking some of the harsher or unwashed tobaccos such as some flavors of Al-waha and Nakla. Before I used the 40mm coals by cutting them in half then putting 2 half pieces across from each other, then putting 2 others on the sides I hadn't used yet when the first 2 halves were done. With Al-waha and Nakla this worked great for the first coals, but on the second set the bowl got very harsh. So I started using just one half after the first 2 coals were done, and the last coal after that, and this has been working great without the harshness. Probably common sense for alot of people but it took me awhile to figure this out. Hopefully it can help somebody else out.
fineout
you could also try 3, 1/4 pieces
PSU Smoker
yep its a great technique...I do the same thing, as smoke starts to thin out I just add another half to the bowl and then get rid of the coals when they get to small to really add any heat
