It sounds like your packing your bowls too lightly. I figured that out when I started using Coco Naras and the tobacco would get harsh real quick. I was frustrated, but I figured that these dense coco coals burn hotter and if the bowl is too lightly packed it burns the shit out of it, but once I packed the tobacco in tighter it was very awesome! What I do now for consistency is to break the tobacco clumps up loosely and then pack it in firmly and then use the punch on my tongs to loosen it up some by poking down through and around the tobacco several times. Capt. Morgan
Rotating the coals around the bowl is also important, don't leave them in one spot or it will burn.

baumann
try packing things other thank Nakhla and Tangiers in a phunnel bowl like this guy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5OenG74ftI it works well for me. In any regular bowl using a circular QL and stuff like Al-waha, poke your holes in a circular pattern (small holes) so your circle is only a tiny bit bigger than the QL. Pack your tobacco somewhat loose to maintain airflow and lightly push it down so it is sitting lower than the rim of the bowl. If you are using cocos in this setup, try two of them with the same hole pattern, but place the cocos more on the perimeter of your hole pattern. If you have airflow problems, poke a big hole down the center of foil through the hole in the bottom of the bowl, but DON't put any coals over this big hole. If you are using a circular QL and you're still burning the tobacco with the situation above, just poke a few more small holes around the QL and move it around to a good position. What kind of foil are ya using? If it's heavy duty, one sheet is good, but otherwise try two layers of foil. I hope this helps. Oh and also, if you're tobacco is burning and you want to save the session, it helps to take the bowl off and blow through the bottom of it to cool of the tobacco a bit.
