MYA QT HELP!!!

Recommended Posts

i just bought a mya qt ... and there seems to be a problem ... the clay bowl is very big im not sure if i should pack it to the top or only half way ... also the bowl doesnt seem to fit tightly over the grommet its kind of loose sitting on top of the shaft. as far as the seal when i put my hand over the bowl and try to take air in its air tight but when i blow out air escapes i dont know if thats normal or not ... last but not least is i tried nakhla and havana special grape on it ... and it was not the best experience i couldnt get the lung filling smoke that i like i even tried two coals ... anyone have any suggestions ? ? ? thanks -lenny

OK...
The qt has a purge valve...when you blow out..the air is escaping through the valve. The little thing screwed into the body opposite the hose socket.
The bowl should be pretty snug over the grommet. if its not your bowl may be slightly missshaped. Is it the one it came with? You can try a little wet paper towel around the grommet to tighten it up a bit. You also whould try putting the grommet in the bowl and then putting the whole thing on the shaft if you don't already. sometimes that helps.
If everything is tight, not sure what your smoke issues are. how high is your water level? should only be an inch to an inch and a hlaf over the end of the shaft.

Where did you by it from? I got mine from H-S and had the same problem with the bowl being loose I called them explained the problem and they sent me a thicker grommet. It won't smoke good if the bowl is loose but now mine smokes like a champ.

I have the same problem with my new QT actually, and I got it from Myasaray.com. Still smokes great and I'm totally impressed with the quality of this piece, but the bowl is a bit loose...

Try wrapping the top of your shaft in a few layers of black electrical tape., then placing the grommet on top of that.....
While im finding him a grommet, you want I should see if they have 2, cymptom?

Ah ok, thanks, I appreciate it. I just sent you a PM but I forgot to mention that I tried the bowl grommet from my 30 inch Egyptian on the QT and it was too big... I don't know what sizes are available but the QT seems to take a smaller grommet. It's a strange issue... I can push the bowl down onto the grommet far enough so that it touches the tray and won't go any further, but it's difficult to get it to stay in that position. It gradually rises up off the stem and becomes slightly unstable. Still smokes great, much better than my SouthSmoke Egyptian, but there's obviously room for improvement. On a side note, I have the S-Class stem. Probably no difference in the top of the shaft, but man... this thing is a beauty. The picture Ali posted does not do it justice at all. I actually thought it was the ugliest of the stems offered but decided to go with it anyway just for the hell of it. It's real nice, and heavy too, though I can't compare it to the other models. Once I get around to it I'll post some pictures.

Sorry about the blank post, clicked the post reply button prematuraly. I have had similar problems gettin the normal mya eygptian bowl to fit snugly on the male part of the QT. I suspect it is because the mya bowls have an exagerated lip at the bottom, and the gaskets tend to slide past the lip and up inside of the shaft of the bowl, where it is much wider, making it very difficult to establish a seal. This can sometimes be fixed with a wet paper towel gasket, or just some finesse. Not only does this poor bowl design often ruin the seal, but I have had two mya bowls break and chip off at the lip, one on its second use about 3 hours after purcasing it. I suspect this occured due to high pressure on this lip when the bowl is pushed down on to te shaft. In anycase, this chipping sloves the sealing problem because it renders the bowl totally unusable. Now I just use a massive old clay bowl from an eypian hookah I purchased two years ago and it seems to work fine.
