Ql'S And Buzz... Best For A Novice?

Recommended Posts

Hey everybody! I know I haven't been around a lot lately... life.

Anyway, my boy just brought his hookah down to school and is running short on supplies. He's a novice, so he's not ready for natural coals (not to mention the whole getting them lit in the dorm part), nor do I think he's ready for Tangiers (he gets that at my house anyway). So I'm looking for recommendations on QL's ( I don't use 'em), and he wants a strong shisha, something with flavor and a buzz.

After reading many reviews, I think 3 Kings is the coal to go for. I'd do HJ, but they'd probably set off the smoke alarms. Opinions for or against 3 Kings? Other QL's that are easy to manage and don't impart a lot of coal taste?

I don't generally get a buzz off shisha anymore, but since I am quitting cigarettes that might come back. For me the king of buzzes was always Tangiers. But like I said, I don't think he's ready for Tangiers solo yet... plus he's in SC, where the humidity at times of the year may be a problem. He likes flavor, and he wants that buzz, so its gotta be unwashed. My first thought is Nakhla. If Al Waha had more flavor, I'd put them up for a vote too. Other brands that might be good for a novice?

Thanks guys and gals, I know I can count on y'all for good advice.

i remember when i was a nooby nakhla used to give me a pretty decent buzz. as far as quicklites , some of the better ones ive used are akhla (smoke like a chimney when liting but fast lighting and leave not to bad of a taste), 3K, and the CH QLs. roland, switlight, AF are all pretty much garbage.

John's CH quicklights are the best, hands down. his new naturals are at the top of my list as well. IMO the ql's aren't nearly as good as the naturals (ash a little weird and don't last as long) but for quicklights, they're the best by miles. last the longest and don't impart any taste.

for tobacco, i would say something like nakhla, even the mizo. i mean if you're looking for a major buzz, hookah probably isn't best, but nakhla will be a great place to start for what it sounds like he's looking for.

how does being a novice make him inept to use natural coals? i say skip the QLs and just get nats...

for the tobacco...nakhla is a good choice. can't think of any that isn't overly candied or chemically, so that's the only suggestion i can make. maybe give Social Smoke a shot too.... Edited by Arcane

John's CH QLs are the only QLs I will even consider using. They light incredibly fast, have no taste, and last for a good amount of time. I have yet to find another one that has no taste to them. They do ash really funky though, and need to be moved around and ashed more frequently than nats.

As far as the buzzworthy tobacco goes, Nak is always a safe bet.

due to being in the dorms I do not recommend Johns QL unless you are smoking outside. They tend to leave a campfire smell in the room you light them in. If you have a decent place to light them outside thats fine, but i have trouble lighting them when its a little windy. For shisha go Nak, AF is usually good for me but some people absolutely hate it (i do admit i wish they didnt dye it red, but otherwise no complaints), i've also never had a problem with AW lacking flavor either, given it doesnt last as long but it was always the cheapest in smoke shops around me (even more so than HH lol).

if you have a window and a fan you can use CH QLs, but then again when i did that i had a room that was seperated from the main hallway by 30 feet or so

Thats what I have been doing. I am totally out of nats and have been using the CH QLs while I wait for my order to come in. I really don't feel like going outside to light them, so I just throw them on my stove with the window open and a fan pumping all of the air out. The smell of the coals barely lingers in the kitchen afterwards, and is not noticeable within minutes of the coals being finished.

yeah if you can move the air out of ur room with a fan through a window do this. When I light mine at home I just light them in the room next to the room I smoke in so the smell tends to linger

Maybe I'm not giving him enough credit, he did learn from me after all (ha). I guess I am more concerned about how he'd get the naturals lit. Its bad enough he's got the hookah in his dorm room, where he's probably NOT supposed to be smoking it; but add a single coil burner or whatever, with 3 college students... is that not a potential for disaster?

But thanks for the advice Arcane, appreciate it.

Thanks... I'd like to see him use John's, but I'm afraid of the flare-ups, smoke and nasty chemicals in his dorm room. Although I have heard that the new ones are much better on that score....

Thanks PSU. My concerns exactly on the CH QL, though I have heard they are better now... with less smoke and flareup.

I use 3 kings everyday without an issue. easy to get, light, and smoke. Nakhla margarita or Tropicana have huge flavor and are a good buzz.

i have the new version of the CH coals. I would just tell him to light them in the bathroom and crank up the vent fan or something. but that's because i will never use ql's from anyone other than john. 3kings et al just don't last enough time for it to be enjoyable before having to light fresh coals. also, if you smoke with naturals and then go back to 3ks, you will see HOW BAD those make the shisha taste. I go between cocos, CH qls and CH nats frequently without any real difference (just make sure the CH qls burn all that shit off first).

Why don't you get a roll or two and a small 48 piece box of john's new coals and test them all out?
