New Coconaras!

Recommended Posts

I got my first box of new ones today. I was definitely surprised about the size. The are more like even blocks instead of the old cubes.

The heat seems to be up to par, and they last just as long as they used to. Its a smaller surface area on the foil, which I think is decreasing the amount of heat thats going through at any given time. However, I haven't had even the slightest bit of harshness with very minimal effort towards heat management.

I wasn't too sure about them at first, but so far, so good.

yeah i use a mini so I always cut them in half and now with the cube shape they dont work as well with halves. I thought we had something and then you went and changed on me.

okay i have a couple boxes of these and I haven't opened them yet. Saw this thread I decided to open them up.

My initial thoughts:

1) Cubes kinda suck took me a bit to master cutting them in half.

2) They now have an odor similar to John's coals but no where as strong but it's there.

3) I don't think they burn as hot, don't have my infrared thermometer to verify, but i have 3 halves on a small phunnel and they are bigger than the old ones and smoking great. Smoking Tangiers with Coconaras is now better.

4) Old Ash: White. New Ash: Light Grey. Guess they are using more filler now. SUCKS!

5) New box finally fits back in my kitchen drawer YEAH!!!!!!!! *Stuie does dance*

Summary the new ones have pros and cons, but the fact I can smoke Tangiers better with new cocos... I like them!

hm..wont be seeing these for a little while yet..already ordered a box of CH nats..sounds like the cutting in half would be a pain tho..seeing as i bought a pipecutter just for the flatter ones they used to have.

I don't mind the shape myself. I just recently finished off a box of CH nats that I purchased early last year. Those burn hotter than the Coconaras I recently purchased at a local smoke shop. To me it felt that I could manage the heat better. I fire up two coals and set them on the edge with about a third of the coal not touching the bowl. After about 20-30 minutes when it's burned down some. I put the full coal on the edge and just keep going with my session.

Stuie, do you mind me asking how you managed to cut them? I am finding it hard to cut my cocobricos, they are cubes just like the new coconaras. I have this weird cutter thing but sometimes it wont cut the coal in half, it just slices a corner off and crumbles. I need to invest in a better cutter :\

With the new Cocos gotta cut near the front of the blade. Too close to the pivot point it will crush them.

I bought it years ago.

I suggest getting the large one ... around what 23$

truly the best recommendation. i went out and grabbed a handi-cut and it cuts the cocos & john's coals like butter. granted, it's refrigerated butter, but it just breaks them rather cleanly in half. i don't get the odd break nearly as often with these bad boys. THANKS FOR THE RECOMMENDATION, STUIE.

  • 3 weeks later...
Very strange putting them on the burner they are high, heat quicker, maybe fillers like Stuie said. I don't know, they don't heat enough area to me. Maybe I'll get used to them, now I'm missing the old shape. I was going to buy 10 I'm glad I got only 5 boxes of 108. Think I like new box more.

I just picked up a box of these new coconaras, and I'm disappointed. The last version was the unbeaten champion of coals, I never got better flavor, better smoke, better anything. It's sad to see a product degraded in order to maximize profit, there's obviously alot of filler in these.
