Hose Tips

Recommended Posts

Bare with me, I need to vent for a second.

Last Saturday I was making bowls at the lounge and starting hookahs at the same time. At one point, one of my partners came up to me and told me I really should be using a hose-condom to start hookahs as, "people are watching." This really irritated me. In fact, those stupid shits irritate me in general.

I understand if you're sick and you don't want to spread whatever you've got. Ask for a tip. Please. But if you're just afraid to catch cooties, grow up!

Look, I'm not trying to step on any toes here, but we spend a lot of money getting quality hookahs, hoses, and bowls, and put a lot of effort ensuring the hookahs we serve smoke great with the easiest pull possible. And our customers pay more money to get a better pull (prices based on bowl/hose/hookah). When they put one of those effing things on, they might as well be smoking a pumpkin hookah through a straw!

Now, I understand there's a chance I'm completely off on this one. If I'm in the wrong, I will admit it and mend my ways. But that couldn't have come from the Middle East. The whole thing stinks of the typical American "strain at the gnat, swallow the camel" mentality. It's like asking a hooker to brush her teeth first. Anyway, </rant>

Answer me these questions three.

Do you use hose tips? Why or why not?
When you go smoke at a lounge, does the person starting your hookah use a tip? If not, would you like them to?
In your opinion, should we hand out tips automatically or upon request only?
Thanks guys. I'm crossing my fingers here that I'm right. Being wrong makes... me... ANGRY! HULK SMASH!

well... if the health inspector sees you doing that... prepare for a fine. It's health concerns. How do I know you don't have have herpes simplex 1 in remission or just forming.

Health Department get's a report, they will just come down just to fine. And you get on their radar for constant harassment.

Personally if I saw you do it... I am getting up and leaving. Without a second thought.

If i go to a lounge and I don't have my portable tip with me and they don't/won't give me one... bye bye.

American's are filthy people....people are filthy people...

Totally agree with Stuie on that. It's all about not getting herpes. Something like half the country has some form of Herpes and as far as I know I'm not one of them and I dont wanna be. At a hookah bar I always use one. If I'm at home I always wipe the tip of the hose down after someone uses it. And I wipe it good too, like polish that bitch haha. I'm not a germ a phobe, I could honestly care less about maybe catching some cold or something, like I said, it's the herpes.

Yo, but don't wanna sound like I'm bashing you haha, sometimes getting contradicted on here is a pain. I can totally understand the hulk smash haha!

simple fix, just use one hose to start them, switch it out when you take it to your customers. i personally wouldn't really care unless the guy had some serious shmegma all over his mouth, like if he was eating chili cheese nachos or somethin, or its rosie O'Donnel.

They place I go to always give tips, but don't put them on. They understand it's a preference. And they use tips to start them. Then take their old tip off, and bring it over.

At a lounge, I always use tips. Smoking with friends, is alot different than not only smoking after you friends, but a stranger. And their friends.. and THEIR friends.. just too many mouths to enjoy a naked hose.

Obviously with MY hookah, no tips. Ever. It's a sin to mention them aroudn me and good friends. Lol.

But when it comes to my hookah-starter or server.. It's even on a deeper basis than just hygiene. It's right up there with hand washing. I'm sure you would just be slightly irritated if your friend didn't wash his hands after coming back, but if your SERVER doesnt??? Out of the question.

Just simple public facility etiquette.

1. If it's my own hookah and only me smoking, no. Any other scenario, yes.
2. Some lounges don't start hookahs. They put the coal on and leave. Others do and they've always used a tip. If they didn't use one, I'm not smoking from that hookah unless I can use my own hose.
3. Hand out tips automatically. They're not expensive, especially if you get the super cheap ones. Like 200-500 pieces for a dollar.

I agree with Stuie. If I went to a lounge and they took a pull without using a tip, I'd leave or ask them to switch out the hose entirely. If they refuse, I'm leaving.

i agree with you guys, there is a certain bar where i know everyone who works there because they are my friends, when they start my hookahs they don't use a tip and it doesn't bother me because i know them, i think its different if its a personal relationship. however if i go to a different lounge i expect them to use a tip to start it as a sign of respect to me the consumer, it shows me that they have respect for me and that makes me a happy customer

pre-#1: the tips DID originate. When I was in lebanon 6 summers ago EVERY place we went automatically handed out tips.

1. My own house with my own hookah, no. Even at lounges, if i bring my own hose(which i usually do) i won't use a tip - le duh, that's why i brought MY hose. If i'm at a lounge without my hose i will definitely use a tip. well, me and the people i'm smoking with will use the same tip.

2. it doesn't bother me if the guy starting the hookah doesn't use a tip...as long as he gives me one.

3. just like they do in leb and all of the lounges i've been to. the tips are individually wrapped, hand them out automatically, assume they will use the tips. if there are any that are still wrapped when the table leaves just hand them out again (they're still wrapped, after all)

My experience is the same in Lebanon. In the various Gulf states, where wider gauge Egyptian hoses are standard, they also hand out tips, and even with the tip in that shit still RIPS.

By the way, with the Egyptian hoses with removable mouthpieces, I've seen lounge attendants just remove it and start the nargile out inhaling straight from where the scrunchie part on a nammor/razan would be...pretty hardcore :-D

I use tips if I'm at a lounge because yeah, I don't want whatever crazy illness the guy before me had. Or herpes. I'm kind of a germaphobe when it comes to sharing stuff like that. The places I go give you tips but I usually bring one just in case. What really bums me out is when they give me a hose that can't use a tip because it's weird or whatever. And they refuse to change the hose. That happened once. I think tips should be handed out "automatically." They're cheap and it's just nice to believe that, to some extent, the hookah lounge cares about being sanitary.

as already stated, you should use one to start it then remove it when you bring it out. you should also hand out a tip or tips to the people.

but i defiantly see where you're coming from, and if you're more geared towards the classier side of hookah bars i can defiantly see your dilemma. but with all the health conscious people put there and all the diseases, you really should.

When I am using my own hookah no, even if I'm sharing with my friends. If I'm sick, I usually don't smoke! No need to spread about my illness. Sanitation is always in fashion for me at the hookah lounge, I expect my hookah to have a fresh sanitized hose when it arrives at my table. Tips are always optional, but generally a good idea in my opinion.

at a lounge, I don't know if someone is sick or has an STD(I.E. herpes), I don't want that...the lounge I go to once in a while I dont know if they do that because they prep the hookahs in a back room. They have a policy that you have to use a "hose condom" and I like that for the previous stated reason with coming into a lounge...

at home, when other people are smoking, the only time I bust out the tips are when someone is sick or there is someone that is going to be hitting it all night that I don't know(that is a rare occasion)

but generally, lounge + hose tips = must...you're reusing those hoses and don't know is someone is sick with mono or meningitis or has herpes

if you are working at a lounge and preparing hookahs for clients then you should use hose tips. just because the customers will put their dirty mouths on the hose does not mean you should as well.

think of it this way.... if you go to a fast food joint you would expect the kitchen workers to wear gloves right? just because you will be eating the burger with your bare hands doesnt mean they should prepare your food with their bare hands.

You guys all bring up good points. I suppose I've never really been bothered by sharing a drink or fork with someone, so sharing a hose was a non-issue. Of course I understand not everyone feels the same way I do.

But, regardless of what I think personally, the fact that the lounge is a public place changes everything. I'm definitely going to start using a tip to start hookahs. However, tips will remain optional. I like when people choose to not use them as I know they are getting the smoking experience I intended them to have.

I guess I am with you on this one. When I go to the lounge it has a metal mouth piece. A quick wipe and its clean.
