Matto
Some indie music goes great with hookah, modest mouse, cloud cult, the decemberists, iron&wine.. the list goes on and on it's one of my favorite genres to listen to while smoking. Maybe have that be the theme wednesdays. Also the hookah lounge here has a live performance by a different local indie/acoustic band once a month. Every time I have went it was PACKED and they even charge a $10 cover, and it's on a thursday. Not sure if you guys have considered that but it may be something to look at. bellydancerakn
As long as it's not like hardcore hate rap or metal music talking about raping and murder I'd come in. Also, don't blast the music. I smoke hookah to relax (As I'm sure most others do) so loud blaring music, no matter how much I might love it, is not going to mesh with the personal vibe I'm trying to create.
We've thought about doing this. Right now we're closed on Sundays. We were trying to figure out if people would go to shows on a Sunday in this city. If we did it like that, it wouldn't interfere with our normal hookah business.
The music is generally low enough to talk over but loud enough to listen to. We set the volume off the level of ambient noise. Therefore, on the weekends, we crank it pretty loud since there are so many people. People seem to dig it, though. Man, now I'm thinking about that Sunday idea. One of my partners used to throw parties in the park on Sundays and called it "Sunday School". I'd like to bring that back. Rapid's a pretty conservative city so there's really not much to do on Sundays.
wayfarinstranger
The Jukebox idea is good in theory only. You have to assume that most people have terrible taste in music. You should hear the requests we get. In fact, we have a sign behind the bar that says "Song Requests - $50". That's how we feel about that. I like the idea of like-minded people getting together to hear specific types of music. Maybe in a scenario like that, the jukebox idea would work. I've got to figure out what I should add to Mon and Wed to complete the gamut. Maybe poppy, indie-type stuff like Death Cab and The Shins. There's not much of a rockabilly scene here. Huge hardcore scene though, but I'll NEVER play that crap in my lounge, NEVER!!
Yeah, I agree that there are plenty of music requests that I wouldn't want to hear. I was thinking though that you would have a list of CDs or music on your ipod in your lounge collection and it's all on a couple sheets of paper that people could choose from. That way regardless of whatever they want to hear, it's something you'll want to hear too. Or maybe you could break up the list into genres, and people could only select songs from, say, the 80's hip hop section on a certain night. Just a thought.
