Guest Cheng
I got my order through from John today, it was the speediest shit ever!!! It was sent out on the 8th and I got it this morning (13th). So thanks John Anyways, I never smoke Tangiers before, I got (both Lucid) Horchata and maraschino cherry. Question is: Do I need to acclimate? I know that your not supposed to with Lucid, but my cherry smells a bit burnt with a hint of burning. I got both in plastic tubs now, the lids are off resting in my room. What are the ideal conditions for acclimating Tangiers? warm? cold? I have a small window opened too, should it be close or open? Also I am a cig smoker, is it a bad idea to smoke cigs in the same room that im acclimating my shisha? If anyone who smokes Tangiers who is also from the UK like me, please post in here, I would like to hear your thoughts about this. Hope you guys can help me out here, im a total noob with Tangiers P.s. I am now a proud owner of the HJ Allien bowl P.p.s. My hot plate broke again! It wont turn on, does this happen a lot when using them to light up coals?

Finally another one in the UK who has Tangiers! i ordered lucid twice before and haven't had to acclimate it on both instances. If it smells abit off, or soy saucy, then you will need to acclimate it. Even my Noir K cherry i smoked straight out the packaging. I think some flavours need aclimating(brambleberry) and some dont(k cherry). im afraid i cant answer your cig question as i dont have any clue about that ! From what i remember, you should leave it open for a few hours at room temperature, if it still smells really bad/smokes awful, you need to do the 4/20 method. someone correct me if im wrong, but you pu tit for 4 hours in the freezer and then 20 hours at room temperature in your room. Anyway! Hope you enjoy it! Feel free to PM me if need be!
matias
Question is: Do I need to acclimate? I know that your not supposed to with Lucid, but my cherry smells a bit burnt with a hint of burning.
The first culprit looks like it could be too much heat or not the right quantity of tobacco. What coals are you using and how many? Here is a great step-by-step by Eric on how to get the quantities right: http://www.tangiers....385&#entry17385 As for acclimation issues, I understand Lucid is much less sensitive to it but, as Eric would say, any tobacco can get humidity shock. How does it smell? Soy / BBQ sauce? Acclimation won't hurt your tobacco in any case.
What are the ideal conditions for acclimating Tangiers? warm? cold? I have a small window opened too, should it be close or open?
First of all, alternate opening the container for 4 hours, stirring juices and shisha from all over your container every hour and keeping it closed for 20 hours. The best moment for having the container open is when conditions are closest to when you intend to smoke. So if you have a big difference in air moisture between morning and evening, for instance, and intend to smoke in the evening, that's the moment you would keep it open (that's absolute moisture in the air, or dew point, not the relative humidity: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dew_point). I guess it's not the case in London though. If you smoke with an open window, or the AC on, acclimate with an open window and the AC on. Humidity shock happens when the amount of moisture in the air is very different from that when the tobacco was put in an air-tight environment (the last time you closed the air-tight lid, when it was bagged in SD etc...). Humidity shock is most acute when the air moisture is highest. To acclimate use a shallow and wide polypropylene container (minimum flavour ghosting) and spread the tobacco thin. The thinner it is spread, the quicker it will acclimate.
Also I am a cig smoker, is it a bad idea to smoke cigs in the same room that im acclimating my shisha?
Shisha can pick up smells. Quoting Eric again:
the rule is: if you don't want it for lunch, don't have it near the tobacco. Strong smelling foods might be picked up too
So, if you are chain smoking black tobacco, it might be best to avoid doing it in the same room. On the other hand I do not know if the picked up burnt cigs tobacco smell would not be hidden by the shisha tobacco itself.
P.p.s. My hot plate broke again! It wont turn on, does this happen a lot when using them to light up coals?
Hot plates are supposed to have a pot, a pan or something on top which "captures" a large amount of the generated heat. When you only have a few coals the heat build-up in the plate is much higher. Depending on how heat-resistant its parts are, it can be a problem. Coil heaters often warp for this reason and though plates are usually much more resilient a connection or a cable could have been damaged by the heat build-up
matias
someone correct me if im wrong, but you pu tit for 4 hours in the freezer and then 20 hours at room temperature in your room.
putting the shisha in the freezer (the no-frost kind) is meant to dry it up if the 4/20 method proves insufficient. In any case, as Eric says, "Whatever works for you, keep doing it".
If you change the tobacco to a drier environment, putting it in the freezer will dry it out faster. That is assuming you have a frost-free freezer. Regular frost freezers probably work, too, but a frost-free freezer works harder to remove moisture.
More details Also, quoting Bulldog 916 this time :
Less Heat! More tobacco. This is what the man himself recommended to me to make sure you get a good bowl every time. Acclimation is pretty minor on the scale of problems you might have.
So make sure you are packing correctly. A great demonstration can be found in what is in my opinion the best video on how to pack a tangiers bowl: HJ and Eric in SD http://www.youtube.c...h?v=ACfPMVGV2V0 I will finish where I should have started: don't fret too much, keep it simple, it is simple. matias
Also, Maraschino Cherry has excellent humidity resistance (5 on a 1 to 5 scale) while Horchata is under average with 2/5.
Guest Cheng
Damn matias, your like a walking bible for Tangiers! Your posts looks like a report, you should reference it according to the Harvard referencing system Thanks for the help man, I will leave the lids open for a few mor hours before I close em up, I will be smoking the Horchata tonight and I cant wait!!! As for the cigs, I dont chain smoke, I smoke one or two per hour, but if im being lazy, then I wont smoke much lol. Anyways, Thanks to both of you dudes for your replays, I hope my Tangiers experience will be good, Im gonna smoke from Johns Allien bowl, so I wont use too much tobacco, if it goes wrong then I wouldnt have wasted too much. matias, Can you get hold of Coil burners? I was thinking of getting one from the US, but their plugs are different from our EU plugs, all I know about electronics is that you plug it in and turn on the power and it works lol. Guest Cheng
So coil burners dies like hot plates? I got my hot plate from ebay, the first time it died within a week, but this time it was like 2 months. I dont think the seller will replace it this time

Try getting a small sized plate, something around 15cm diameter. They produce less heat and the coals absorb a higher percentage of it (though the difference is negligible I guess. The question is whether to get a good quality plate that might have better materials and maybe not die as quickly or get a cheap one that won't make your wallet sigh once it dies. (for those with acclimation difficulties, you'll have to explore other methods like the 4/20 method. (basically what Namenone said...you can tell he's speaking from experience) also, for coconut coals or any other non-QLs...coil burners do a better job at lighting them than hot plates....if you smoke a lot and will make regular use of the coil burner, my suggetion would be to buy the coil burner and get a converter/adapter for the plug issue. matias
ok, it looks like I read some of this stuff diagonally. Sorry to have given you a headache, Arcane. About coil burners, the two I owned might have been crap but they both died quickly. The plate I got after these lasted 2 years until I boxed my hookah to move and is still going good, albeit after a 6 years holiday. I guess I should have given that context instead of making a generalizing statement.

Guest Cheng
Thats the one, can you get them in spain? If so expect a PM from me I cant find anyone who sells it in the UK. Google has no results apart from the US...
the_cool
Nope there are NO coil burners in UK. However....there is one in the US which is UK spec. It is called the Nikai Japan Hot Plate Single 1000w. Amazon has one, from some other seller which i dont know if is trustworthy or not, and its about 40-50 dollars plus shipping i think. Check it out. But other than that, no coils for us! I first tried a blow torch, takes too long and i refuse to stand there heating them for 10 mins. I then bought a camping stove, effective but it drinks gas, and works out too expensive. I now have a flat hot plate from ebay. Lloytron i think is the make. Its ok, a bit annoying that it get quite red hot and starts lighting the coals, but then the thermostat kicks in and shuts it off. At this point you flip the coals and start fanning! I now have a hair dryer which makes it faster, the coals now burst into flames Edited April 14, 2010 by the_cool
Venger
I know this will probably anger the hookah gods and provoke the charcoal gnome but have you considered 3 king quick lites? I use them because I live in an apartment and well gosh its just plain safer and easier then trying to light nats on the porch then carting them through the living room. They light fast,no smell or taste well fully lit. .02 Ray
the_cool
In the UK, we dont have 3 kings, we have swift light. Which used to decent back in the day but then the quality went down hill and they were utter crap. Exploded, didnt last long, tasted like shit. I have moved on to cocobricos. I cant go back to QL's! Guest Cheng
Me too man, I use cocobricos, I dont use QL any more. I saw that on amazon, works out around £36 shipped, which is a bit pricey for me, but when my loan and grant drops this weekend it may be a different story (sings Lil wayne - make it rain Chorus). The hotplate I got is made by Orbit, first unit broke down within a week, the seller offered to exchange it, now this one is fucked too.. I smoked Horchata tonight in my allien bowl, smoke was big but yet again I was let down by the taste. Dont get me wrong, it tasted nice, but the strength of the flavour was quite weak. TobiasKM
The hotplate I bought was useless. If you left the coals on it for 20 minutes then maybe you'd a small spark at the corner of the coal.. From there to fully lit, is a loong way. I've yet to actually find a worhtwhile way to light natural coals. There doesn't seem to be coilburners in Denmark.. I'd have to import it. For now, I'm using Johns Quicklites. Perfectly decent.. Though I'd love to use Coconaras since they're more readily availabe around here.
Guest Cheng
Ok, I bought the coil burner lol. The ebay seller is ignoring me I think, and I will bet if he does replace it, the hot plate will break down within a few weeks... Here is the site I got it from: http://www.cosmetics...ai-Japan/Detail They are the same ones from Amazon. I ordered through Amazon for safety. This coal burner has a 3 pin plug for us EU guys. So it will work for anyone who uses a 3 pin power socket, I hope this will be useful to us EU guys who cant get hold of coil burners.
TobiasKM
That's actually an easy way for me to get it! Though relatively expensive, with 15 british punds shipping to get it to Denmark. I'd be very interested in hearing how it turns out for you. But thanks for the heads up! Much appreciated.

Guest Cheng
I got my package today, I ordered on the 14th and I got it today (23rd). The lady who was on the phone said that it would have been even faster if the volcano thing didnt happen. This was shipped from the USA to their warehouse in the UK and then sent to me via Royal mail. I guess they use some kind of 24/48 hour cargo service to get stuff from the US to the UK. Oh, the packaging was good too, loads of packing peanuts and the box was undamaged. I thought this was a jap burner, the Manuel is in Arabic though? I will fire up this baby later today, as its too early to smoke now
