Still Having Issues With Tangiers

Recommended Posts

Ok so after a year or two the closest I can get to a sweet lucious bowl of Tangiers is the first bowl. After that the second bowl starts to smell/taste like tobacco. I acclimate it 4/20 and I haven't really got it to taste right after the first bowl basically the first day I got out of the package.

I have noticed when I open up my tub after a day of 4/20 acclimation that's when it smells good, but then within a minute it smells like tobacco. Which then I start acclimating again. I have smoked it smelling like tobacco (New Lime) and I get a hint of lime, but overwhelming taste of Tobacco. Edited by newjacksm

It could be your weather/humidity changing... If you're having strange weather, just wait a while til it becomes consistent and then try it.

Weather has been pretty consistent here on Long Island.

I've been having the same problem actually. One day I can get it smoking fine, but another day it's smoking harsh after I acclimated it. I tried to stay as consistent as I could be with my packing method, but nothing seemed to give me the perfect smoke every time. I'm currently staying away from tangiers to see what other brands I might like, but one day I'm planning on giving the lucid line a try as I hear it's a lot easier to smoke.

I'm officially 1kg deep..and I got it close on the last 250g of new lime..but it was still tobacco-ey ...the freezing thing for 8ish hours before acclimating it seemed to help immensely..particularly on steady weather weeks like this past one up here in IL. In the meantime I think I'll stick around my mizo/romman fix for unwashed. If I could find a pack of that tangiers blueberry I'd give it another shot...but noone has it :(

That problem is most often caused by drawing tobacco off the top of the tub. If its an acclimation issue it will change up and down. If it gets steadily worse, its usually attributable to raking off the top. If you only draw off of the top of the tobacco, often you will get too much of the flavor and there won't be enough for the rest. Also, this problem can be complicated by using a tall tub with a small footprint. A shallow tub with a large footprint is preferable. Several people I know in San Diego have similar problems, and it isn't acclimation related. Since Tangiers doesn't have a lot of water so the flavor will "scatter" more and separate into layers. Citrus fruit flavors will be the most problematic.

Hope that helps.

The tub I am using is about 4 or 5 inches tall and about a 12-14 inches long. It's got the number 5 and the 2 P's and everything.

Is my tub a bit to big? I have a glass bowl( tupperware not bowl as as in shisha ) that I used before. Being it was a bowl I didn't think I was acclimating all the shisha. Ill give it another spin tomorrow. Edited by newjacksm

After I acclimate the Tang and smoke the first bowl, for every bowl after that I let it acclimate for a short while. I usually open it up and let the container sit while I'm setting up the hookah, and lighting the coals. Ten minutes passes, I stir it again, smell it, and smoke it. Haven't had any consistency problems yet.

I feel you, man. I've consistently had issues too. I'm working on some New Lime at the moment which smelled amazing right out of the bag, but five minutes later smelled like BBQ Sauce. I've been 420'ing it ever since, but it doesn't really seem to be doing much better.

This confuses me because there's this other kid who lives out here who says he's never had a problem with Tangiers. I can see only three options: 1) He's a liar, 2) He likes the taste of tobacco, or 3) I've completely missed the boat on this whole thing.

I'll keep trying, but it breaks my heart every time I throw out another 250g of lost cause. Why can't they all be like the K's?

I've been having a similar problem with the pomegranate, I have never really had an issue with acclimation till this flavor, which bums me out, because this is one of those flavors I was all giddy in the pants for. Anyone have any ideas or a similar problem?

why not check out the kid's method and ask him to show you "proof"?

maybe he's doing something different than you are....and his method may very well work for you too...

Bingo!

One big key to Tangiers is STIRRING! Stir it really good, get all the corners, scrape the bottom and stir again. The smell will slightly change right after the stirring, but it very quickly stablizes. By the time i fill the base, plug in the hose and get the coal going, its good to go.

define "very quickly"...because, i've always noticed this when i leave Tangiers out....the smell is accurate and very strong. as soon as i stir, the aroma dies down and there's a fairly robust burnt tobacco smell in its place. and it doesn't really get back to good for an hour or so...

Thats weird, you have alot more experience with using Tangiers, but in the past few days of knowing what I'm doing, I notice that when I stir it up, the tobacco does looses some of that in your face flavor, but it does equal out pretty quickly. Although it should be noted that I'm in the same climate as where it's made. So much so that I pulled it out of the packaging and it needed no acclimation, even after a few days of it being in the tuperware that I put it in.

That's the thing. He has no method. He just opens it and smokes it. I've tried that method... and have gotten sick. :)

Arcane - is the container you keep yer tangiers in deep? Mabey acclimation hasnt gotten down to the tobacco below?

My container is pretty shallow, after unpacking 250g, it levels out to be about 1" deep. I stir it around every hour or so until it all smells good, then i just seal it up (if im not smoking).

But if i pull out a flavor i wanna smoke, open it and it smells fantastic. I stir it up reallly good and i take a wif and its not the same. It still smells ok, with some other scent. But by the time i set up my hookah and start packing the bowl, it smells great again. I dunno, might be a span of 10 min?

I actually remember Eric saying that when stiring certain vapors are released. I dunno exactly, its somewhere in those "I cant get tangiers to work" threads.

i don't consider it deep. the container looks like this: http://www.locknlock.co.th/images/HPL321.jpg it's 1.2L in capacity. the depth is maybe 3inches or half the size of a soda can. the tobacco also ends up about 1inch in height when spread out evenly...

and again, same thing...i stir it up, the scent dies down and gets accompanied by a burnt tobacco-y scent. however, the only difference is i have to wait about an hour for that other scent to fade. it doesn't really bother me, since i just set it out an hour earlier than when i'm gonna smoke....but, i always feel like i'm not getting 100% in regards to flavor, since the tobacco has time to settle again.

the 90% or so that i am getting is great though. :)

Hrmmm beats me!

So yer saying, ya dont stir it up right before ya pack the bowl?
Although i cant imagine how much "juice" drips off in an hour. I doubt there is much diff between just stirred shisha to stirred-an-hour-ago shisha. Specially when its tangiers.

No way i could say that if it was any other brand.
