Coals Up Or Down?

Recommended Posts

For those of you who use biconcave coals such as three kings, do you have the dent facing down or into the air?

PS: used the wrong term, not biconcave but positive meniscus.
pretty much the coals that have the dent in them.

When I use them I always start dent up. My feeling is it's less heat on the shisha and warming it up slower lets it simmer and lets the juices come out more and creates a better more flavorful smoke. Who knows...

flat side down to start.once things get hot I will flip them. When I add the second round its flat side up to control heat.

i have always put the dent down. I think it allows hot air from under the coal to be sucked into the bowl while having little contact with the foil itself.
