So I Really Tried To Get Into Coco'S And New Exotica'S

Recommended Posts

I just dont get what all the love for them is.

The ashing and constant care these need just make smoking a pain for me. I usually throw one stick of real Japanese style coals on a bowl, and I dont move them for 45 min.

Last night because of the golden canary shortage, I messed around with Johns coals, and coco's.

Am I doing something wrong? 2 pieces on a small phunnel, smoking tangiers. I left the coal on the stove for 5 min waited till all black was gone.

I had to attend to these coals every 10 min. And the end result for me was yes they are better than exoticas, but I swear they change the taste of the tobacco.

Anyone want to chime in, as I know there are so many nara lovers out there.

I was using 3k QL and then got a small box of CN and wow they were really good I never knew how much of a taste the 3k had until I did the coco's. I do mine up about 5 min. 2 of them for my vortex bowl on my MYA QT and I have to ash about once. Move them around twice maybe and i'm smoking for an hour and a half. Sometimes for me atleast a wind cover keeps them going a lil longer than their already lengthy time. These are some great coals so I hope you can figure what's going on with them out. and my only taste was the shisha no coal flavor from what I could tell.

The way I see it, half cocos last as long or longer than the japanese coals, and cost the same or less per box. I dont have much luck with two fulls, i think four halves of the old cocos or three wholes work quite well. I just set them on the bowl and let them do their thing, ashing them once and moving to the center when they get pretty small. Never felt they changed the taste of tobacco, but who knows you might be better able to pick up the taste since you dont use them.

I use CCNs four halves and two fulls on my Tangiers mini and small phunnels and never have trouble. In fact, CCNs four halves I leave on the bowl, never touching them or ashing them. When I use two fulls I have to rotate them, but that's it. John's coals are extremely high maintenance. I'm using a box of those right now until I get more Coconaras, and I can't stand using them. They ash like crazy and have to be constantly moved. Drives me crazy.

I have been trying to use only CocoNaras now. I had a lot of trouble at first with the charcoal tasting weird but i have been leaving them on the stove for 5mins on each side and it has worked well. I am going to try the 4 halves though because when i use 2 full cubes they do start to burn and i have to rotate them. I am used to 3 kings where i just light the coal and I don't have to mess with it.

if your coconaras are not lasting longer than your GC's...you may in fact be doing something wrong.

as far as coal management, i think they may be influenced by your packing technique. the times i used coconaras, i didn't have to touch them at all. not even to ash.

as far as taste goes, i'm not sure what you mean by they changed the taste....did they impart a certain flavor? or did you find the flavor to be a lot cleaner?

Yeah I have to be honest, Johns coals are not very good.

I will try the cocos again tonight, and leave them on for a little longer. I pack the bowl like everyone does with Tangiers.

I posted this, becuase I am not a Fumari fan, and I was looking for the best alternative until I can get the golden canarys back.

Had a small phunnel of K-Cherry going just last night, was smoking with friends and cutting up watching TV etc never touched the coals we had 2 Coconaras on top the entire time and only realized once the smoke started dwindling to put more on. We moved to ash the coals but there was almost nothing left. CCN's are the lowest maintenance coals in my opinion. You must be doing something wrong.

funny thing is not everyone packs the bowl the same way...i know my packing technique differs TREMENDOUSLY from mushrat's or rivethead's....

i literally smash my tobacco in the phunnel...to near brick like consistency....mushrat said he just tosses some tobacco in a bowl and uses little heat, pat stated he prefers the light packing....

i'm not sure what their coal management consists of, but for the most part....it would be directly contributed to how the tobacco was packed in the bowl. if the coals aren't going out, i'd try and adjust your packing technique to work with the coconaras....at least, until you can get some GCs again.

You might be a noobie. Not that thats a bad thing, but with a great phunnel, tobacco and packing, you can TASTE the quick light mess of crapola.

I don't like coco's because they burn too hot. Exotica's are my main squeeze, since Golden Charoals (the real Japanese) are out now.
