Tightly Coiling Hose

Recommended Posts

My friend has an air compressor in his workshop, and he has some hoses that self coil and are really handy to keep out of the way when not in use, would something like http://www.amazon.com/Speedaire-1VEH9-Coiled-Hose-Nylon/dp/B001H4XGLI work as a hookah hose?

You don't want to stiff of a hose, otherwise the vase will move around when your moving the hose from person to person, or just in general. Bad experience from a stale MYA hose, it was very stiff with no flex and caused someone to accidentally break my hookah vase.

The problem with a coiled hose is that when stretched it naturally wants to contract back. For most materials suitable for a hose this will also create a lot of pull on the base when extended and make tipping the base much easier. Plus if you want to just set the hose down for half a second while you grab a drink, shake a hand, etc. it goes slinking back into a coil and you have to reach for it again, negating it's time-saving qualities. If you are really interested and want to try it though you could pick up some .25" OD vinyl tubing from Lowes/Home depot , wrap it around something the diameter of your desired coil (like a tall drinking glass) and put the whole thing in boiling water for around 5 min, making sure that the hose doesn't touch the bottom for too long as that would burn a hole in the vinyl. This will set the hose shape for a bit and make the whole hose a little more flexible. It probably won't stay coiled for more than a couple weeks though. Give it a try and let us know.
