Tasteless Shisha

Recommended Posts

Ok so. I have about a kilo and a half of shisha. The brands are AF, Nakhla, Starbuzz, and Social Smoke. Thing is whenever I smoke them, they have no taste. The shisha smells fine, and the smoke smells like the falvour, but it doesn't taste like anything. I smoke in groups, and all the others have said they get a taste, sometimes kind of faint, sometimes very strong, but they always taste the shisha. The last time I tasted a shisha was Hookah Hookah a few months ago when I bought my original knockoff QT. All of the shisha is within the good-by date. So what is it?

I smoke outside using a QT with CH nats. Usually 2 coals to my MYA stadard bowl. And yes I am going to be getting a regular egyptian, and small phunnel. I have no windcover and the coals are fully lit when I put them on the bowl.

Please help me!!!!!

Only thing I can think of right off the top of my head is not packing it right. If you don't pack a bowl properly sometimes it won't give you the flavor you're looking for. How are you packing the bowl?

I'd pay attention to the packing and heat management as well, spread the heat out evenly for a better flavor.

Also if everyone else is getting flavor and you're not it might be a sinus issue. So make sure you're drinking some fluids (not soda) and even use a tongue scraper if you want, it helps your taste buds stay fresh.

Yeah, I was thinking her tastebuds might be messed up. :P

But Liquid's right about the heat management as well... Make sure you pack the bowl properly and do your coals right. As Greg said, you'll notice a world of difference once you get an Egyptian and Tangiers phunnel. The Mya bowls aren't that great, IMHO.

Well you dont really "taste" the shisha, its the smell that you get from the back of your throat where your nasal passages connect to your mouth/throat. I'm basing that info off of experience from having a stuffed nose, and not being able to taste/smell a thing from smoking it. Maybe it's something strange like your specifically looking for your taste buds to be tasting the smoke, and can separate your brain from noticing the smelling of it in the back of your throat, from what your actually tasting on ur taste buds. I'm not sure though, I would say it's the packing and heat management, but you said that everyone else your smoking with can taste it fine, and the smoke smells like the flavor.

Quit blaming it on the bowls. Damn, I ran a business that was quite successful for 3 years using Mya standards and Phunnels for the Tangiers. It's either going to be too hot, too cold, or you need to give your taste buds a break. Ask any pack a day smoker if they can taste things like they used to, if they say yes then they don't remember how things used to taste. :)

I think there's more to this than packing and heat management. I'd say about 75% of what I buy in local shops here has very little or no taste, it's very hit and miss, then every once in a while I buy a pack that has knock your socks off flavour and lasts for an hour. Packing and heat management makes little difference. Okay if the heat management is not right, the flavour won't last as long, but if it's not there from the start that's not the problem. I buy Al Fakher and use al Fakher coconut coals here and i've resigned myself to the conclusion that it's just a very hit and miss quality product. I also think the taste diminishes quite quickly once the sealed pack is exposed to the air even if kept in a sealed container. I've wasted so much money on packs that I get nothing from. My regret is that having tried all sorts of ways to add some flavour to tasteless shisha I've never found anything that works and end up throwing i away. I'd love to know what the ingredient is, for exampli in double apple, one thing for sure it's not apple.

I'm with Mush, I get outstanding flavor from the cheapest Egyptian clay bowls. It could be the heat or the packing. Make sure you really stir up the juices before you pack it. Make sure your pipe is airtight. If you're getting good airflow, it's probably not packed too tight. Your coals should be really hot, that affects flavor as well. That you're using different brands makes me think it might be a medical problem as well. If my allergies are acting up, I can't taste it as well either. I hope that helps, it's really disappointing to throw away a tasteless bowl of crap!

You say that like it's a good thing.

I have had no such consistency problems with AF. To be honest, I disagree with most everything you said.

I agree, I've never had bad AF, it's always been a top quality shisha with amazing flavor!

a) always make sure the hookah is clean and the water is changed every time.
B) use a washable hose and stick to one flavor/hose
c) In my opinion, 2 charcoals on a MYA head is too much. I would recommend 1 charcoal and possibly a wind cover if needed
d) I find it sometimes that if you "inhale" too hard, you tend to burn the head faster. Taking it slow is the way to go!
