If there were an herbal as good as Tang or Nak, I would be all over it after the tax hike. If it is as good as traditional shisha, who cares. Most experienced smokers don't get a buzz anymore anyway. If sugar cane is deadly, I would avoid it but there are others such as teasha. I bet that if we get into a situation like our friends in Australia, there will be a lot more resourced directed at developing quality herbal shisha. By the way, I voted buy herbal and tobacco on special occasions. The special occasions would be when the flavor I want is not good or not availale in herbal. You gotta roll with the punches.

Yeah, when this goes down (cause it eventually will) I would hope herbal would be further developed and made to taste just like the real thing, and put out clouds like the real thing, so that all you're lacking is the buzz. Hence why I chose option #2. I would smoke herbal and real tobacco on occasions IF herbal was good, say if Eric of Tangiers decided to do an herbal line or something.

I personally would smoke herbal now if it lasted as long as real tobacco, I don't care for the buzz anyways I smoke for flavor

I'm thinking once the tax laws pass the companies might think, "Oh, maybe we should direct our attention on herbal since not everyone is going to be able to afford the new prices..." This means herbal could be refined to last long, give great flavor, and put out huge clouds.

I hope I'm right.

I'll just buy it online from an overseas company. For the domestic producers, I'll wait and see.

The cost of customs would probably go up too. I think i would quit smoking or just stock up before it happened and smoke the rest of what i had and mix it with herbal to make it last longer.

honestly, i just turned 18 and i have been smoking hookah among other tobacco products for close to a year now, and no amount of laws will ever keep tobacco completely out of the hands of kids. There will always be some "cool" parent or smoke shop owner out for their own behalf that will disregard the law. I do believe that if hookah smoking continues to grow in popularity, we may begin to see some drug stores carry either cheap brands (al-waha) or something very americanized (sb blue mist etc). If this were to happen, i think we could see a drop in overall price because drug stores have much better prices on tobacco products than any smoke shops or convenience stores.

i am highly skeptical drug stores would carry hookah products...

Why not? If they truely belive that smoking will make you sick or addicted, then it would be in their best interest to provide tobacco to you now and provide medicine or "stop smoking aids" to you in the future. Edited by Skoozle

I'd stock up as much as I could, then sell to people around here. Granted there be a warning of some sort.

If it were to happen today, it would take me quite a while to start worrying about my supplies.

And while we see our hookah tobacco products getting more and more unattainable, other illegal substances are getting closer and closer to legalization.
If they legalize NHT, someone will mix it with some molasses, glycerin, & flavor and start a new brand. You can keep the "buzz" that way. ;)

By the way, how's Salaam? Never had it...

IMO it's the best herbal on the market - massive clouds.

I have my doubts about how far this will go. Granted I haven't really familiarized myself with the legislature so this is just an uneducated assumption, but think about what happened with prohibition. People need their vices, and necessity is the mother of invention. Fortunately for us, Big Tobacco will fight this battle for us, and we all know what kind of pull they have in politics. Worst case scenario, there's always Mexico. :)

By the way, it's all stupid to try and keep tobacco away from kids by raising taxes. Kids have only disposal income. They don't pay rent, etc., so they have no problem using all of their cash for tobacco. The only people is actually hurts are those who do have to choose between making a car payment and buying 250 grams of shisha. Kids could give a rats ass how much it costs. They're kids.

very true. i honestly dont believe it has all about kids though...i think part of it is also the gvt is missing out on a large amount of money to be made off these taxes and what not. i think instead of charging us an arm and a leg, they should just do it like your buying ammo...at least i would be willing to.... u need a valid drivers license or I'd and submit it to where ever u order from. instead of paying 30$ for a bag of tang...as long as its a trustworthy company

Here in the UK, we're already theoretically in this situation. Customs & Excise started enforcing a duty of more than £70 per kilo of molasses, and it has all but wiped out the legit UK mail order suppliers; those who remain in business have gone exclusively herbal, rather than apply for tobacco licences and pay the relevant import duties. One can understand why; the tax on a 250g packet of tobacco that costs £10 on the black market would amount to almost £18 and prices would triple. I don't know whether you will see a similar situation in the US, but the impact here has been to reduce the number of suppliers and the choice of brands.

Of course, people are inherently anarchist, and it's not hard to obtain black-market tobacco either via those bringing it in from abroad or in certain Middle Eastern shops where it is sold under the counter. There are companies who will ship it from Israel, Dubai or elsewhere in Europe, but prices are not better than typical black market price and the risks of detection and seizure rest with the punter. So, basically, if you're willing to go find it, it is still available, including via plenty of channels where it officially shouldn't be. What has suffered is choice; we no longer have a free and legal market in shisha molasses, so what's on offer is what someone's got available.

As for what I'm doing about it - I will not smoke non-tobacco molasses. While I have a supply of Nakhla, I'm gradually stocking up, but have decided to limit myself to about one new pack a month; if it dries up, it dries up, and I'll find another way. I am also going to have a serious look at growing and curing my own tobacco over the coming year, but my hope is to go on buying Nakhla for as long as I choose to smoke. I will also be experimenting with various wetting agents (aka shisha juice) which can add glycerine and molasses to the tobacco as desired; first I'd like to see what these do to Nakhla tobacco, and in doing so I can also assess whether they would make a suitable range of wetting agents and flavours for a home-made tobacco if I can grow something suitable.
