New H-S Glass Bowls

Recommended Posts

What do you guys think? Looks pretty sweet and for $12, not a bad deal. I think I'm gonna pick up a funnel-style one.

I bought their standard glass bowl in the past. The first time the glass cracked and eventually leaked. HS was very helpful in sending out a replacement. They shipped the 2nd one and same problem again. I just said fugg it and let it be.

Was it this "mod" style or was it the taller style? I think the taller ones they have have butterflies on them or something?

from a glass eye :) they look like they are soft glass to me, not borosilicate (pyrex) glass which would make me very nervous about them breaking easily. soft glass cannot take the same heat that borosilicate can because the expansion rate of the material is much higher.

its mostly the color work that gives it away, there is no way if it was borosilicate you would get a bowl for 11 dollars with that much color in it, the color is just to expensive.

Exactly what I was thinking. You go from using that to cleaning it with water and watch it spider web. *tink.. tink.. CRACK* Good for the price, just no way it's boro.

Good to know..

As far as cleaning with water, I usually pull off the foil and let the bowl cool down anyways for a hour. I'm ordering one Friday when I get paid and will definately post review

I will probably pick one up, But Santino's Mini Phunnel is something you have to look into. I reviewed it already and I love it.

taller version.
as mentioned, the only way to prevent cracking is to let the bowl cool before cleaning it. its soft glass so its very fragile.

I agree, that letting the bowl cool down before you wash it MAY help it live a bit longer, but all that heating and cooling in the glass will cause it to crack eventually, that glass just expands and contracts to easily that you are stressing it every time.

If your interested: Coefficient of Expansion means in glass or COE, "The coefficient of thermal expansion describes how the size of an object changes with a change in temperature. Specifically, it measures the fractional change in volume per degree change in temperature at a constant pressure." (from wikipedia)

and

the COE of soft glass aka soda lime glass is around 96, this depends on what brand of glass you buy, and the chemical make up of that material.

the COE of borosilicate glass is around 33, so this is a much better choice for applications that can withstand drastic temperature changes because it expands 1/3 as much as soft glass, making it much stronger and able to withstand a lot more stress.

A quick note/disclaimer. That while we appreciate their expertise, Pancho and Santino also make and market glass bowls themselves. :)

This doesn't make their input any less valid however and if the glass sucks, the glass sucks. :pirate:

this was not meant to discredit you by any means or make you "feel bad" or whatever else. We just felt it was a good idea for people to understand your background and decide for themselves what they want to think/believe. :)
