Difference Between Funnels

So being a complete newbie to funnels, I've been wondering on the differences between the various sizes. I know to get a genuine Tangiers, and also that the HJ alien mini is a quality buy too, but I'm curious as to what amounts of tobacco the various sizes hold. I was considering getting the HJ Alien Mini funnel as I usually like to smoke a smaller bowl with a single coal and have it last between one-two hours when i smoke alone. However i also want a funnel for "party" use, when i break out the MYA two-hose at a BBQ or something, so i'm tossing up between a small and a medium funnel. I usually pack about 50% more tobacco when i pack it for a few people to smoke as the hose is constantly being passed and pulls are occurring much more frequently.

So pretty much, how much does the small Tangiers funnel hold compared to the medium?

Oh, you only need the small Tangiers phunnel, trust me. It'll last you hours. And for short smokes, pop in a tealight mod:

So no point getting both then? As long as the small one works well for long and also short smokes with the tealight mod, then i probably will just buy that one and not worry about the Alien Mini.

Also, dumb question, i was reading the huge 90+ page thread on the mini before, is that different to the HJ alien mini? How so?

Yeah, save yourself the money for not only buying two bowls but also all the shish you'll waste with the medium.

The Tangiers Mini Phunnel was a limited production run phunnel a couple years ago... pretty rare to find. HJ made the Alien phunnel with the permission of Eric of Tangiers to satisfy the demand of those looking for Tangiers Minis. I own a Mini and used to own an Alien, and I must say the while HJ's bowl is okay, the Mini smokes much better and is easier to heat manage. Reason for this I believe is Eric designs phunnels knowing they must be certain dimensions (width/depth) to perform correctly. He decided not to keep making the Mini because in his opinion the Mini did not perform to his standards. However, I believe my Mini smokes just as well as my Small Tangiers Phunnel.

 you may also wanna get the hj alien for single sessions. 
i can get the small to burn for at least 3 hours, so for yourself, if you don't want to smoke for that long the alien would be nice to have as well

Chris aka Incubus is right you really probably only need the small tangiers and can do the tealight mod. Now having said this...lol I have the hj mini and a small tangiers. and it's nice not to have to mess with the mod for smaller smoke sessions. Which the mini is great for. If you got the cash IMO grab both, if not just do what Chris suggested. Either way it's a win win in my book.

I have both the Small Tang and the Alien. Since I like shorter sessions, the Alien is my go to phunnel. It holds about 10-15gs of shisha vs about 20-30 grams for the small.

I have a small and medium Tang, but plan on getting an alien too.

In my short time smoking hookah I've learned that you can never have too many bowls.

Read stuie's bowl review thread. all the info you need is in there. Genuine tang funnels are fantastic, stick with a small and a large because the gap the medium fills is kinda silly. there's a crown mini phunnel too, and i'm getting one.

I completely disagree. The large is a totally unpractical bowl unless you want to smoke for over 4-5 hours (Nasty in my opinion). Really, i would recommend a small or at most a medium, because if you cant take the time to repack every couple of hours you have a much bigger problem. Plus your much more likely to waste a lot of tobacco because you get bored/tired of the flavor in a large and have to repack.

Just my opinion, never owned a large.

I'm a smoker too, nicotine tolerance is nice and high lol

All you'll ever need is a small.

I've only seen a large phunnel cashed once and that was after we bet a group of 8 guys at my lounge they couldn't do it. They ended up winning the bet, but t took all eight of them four hours of strenuous smoking on a four-hose, Egyptian hookah to cash that bowl. The funny part was, their prize was a free refill. They were so sick by the end they never even claimed it.

Nowadays, we just use a small phunnel on our four-hose hookahs. Still, we rarely see them get cached. Trust us when we say you only need a small.

If you want smaller than a small tangiers phunnel, I would go with a crown hookah micro phunnel. They are more expensive than the alien, but they also perform a lot better (not that the alien is bad, it is actually pretty good)

Ive smoked the small t and the hj mini for a month now...and the small t sessions last longer but require more heat than the hj mini...I can do 2 coal setups fine with the hj bowl while the small might require more (2 is fine though but the smoke is kinda thin and if it was thick its only for a short time) for perfect smoke. just an observation... > but if you want to use for longer with more ppl then I would get the small tang > new set maybe you can take out the burned shish and mix the new with the leftovers to economize Edited June 1, 2010 by Josh Hamilton
