Smoking & Driving

  1. 1. Do you smoke hookah and drive?

    • Yes
    • No
    • I've tried it in the past
    • I'm thinking about doing this

I've seen this discussed from time to time.

I personally would never consider it because of the tremendous distraction the pipe might cause and also the danger of fire and/or crashing from not paying attention to the road.

So, I was wondering how many folks do this?

I don't and haven't. But I want to. I'm gonna buy the combo bowl and try it out sometime, but honestly I enjoy sitting back and relaxing while smoking rather than performing a job.

Here we go again.........

"What? Distracted driver? Me? No way. Honestly Officer About-to-tear-me-a-new-one, I wasn't on my cell phone or anything, really!"

"That? Oh, that's a hookah. Ummmm, yeah it was lit. Ummm, well, see what happened was that I was driving along smoking just fine and I hit a bump and the whole pipe tipped and the coal landed in my lap and between trying to get the coal off my lap, 'cuz it was burning through my pants to my dick, I forgot to watch really carefully, and I didn't see that old lady stop, and before I knew it I hit her, but I wasn't texting or anything, so it wasn't like I was distracted."

"The coal? Oh, it's over there, by that spreading puddle of gas leaking from the car.........."

'Officer, why are you running?"

Dumb shit, party of one, go directly to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $200.

there's quite a few threads about hookah and driving...but, this sums it up for me:

I have a natural compulsion to force the vehicles of drivers paying more attention to their phones than the road through the guard rail and over the edge of the nearest overpass so that they can die in burning heaps of rubble.

If I had to contend with someone in front of me trying to smoke a hookah and drive, I'd have to seriously consider installing hood mounted machine guns and TOE missile canisters on my car.

I wouldn't do it alone with anything other than a leila or maybe a combo bowl. If you have a co-pilot to man the hookah there should be no problem just using something fairly stable like a caged QT with a wind cover.

The ONLY way it would be possible in my mind is with one of those hookahs that are made for smoking while walking, and being out. It has a hose attached to it, and it's hand held with a wind cover that latches down. Although it's completely pointless. You would have poor heat management, and it would give you shitty smoke.

If you need a nic fix so bad that you need to smoke while driving, then you need to start smoking cigs.

Exactly. Frankly I prefer smoking while chilling out, but I might think about it for those 5 hour car trips to portland. And I would only do with with my QT in its cage and a friend doing heat managment and all.
Kinda stupid to do it by yourself...

I'm going to repeat myself for all the new people since the last time I said this...... If I'm in the car you hit, I'm going to own everything you earn for the next 20 years, because I'm going to sue you and I'm going to win. The jury will automatically hand the verdict to me the moment the cop gets on the stand and tells them there was a lit hookah in your car, Leila or not.

You really want to take a chance that big, go for it. I and others like me can use the extra income.

I prefer to sit back and relax not think about all the vehicles around me and how's my driving. Kinda negates the experience of hookah if you ask me.
Exactly. I've taken hookahs on the road with me. Stopped for a picnic lunch at a nice grassy rest stop and enjoyed an hour smoking break in an 9 hour drive. And had wonderful conversation with people who came over to investigate and find out what we were doing. One hell of a lot better than watching the road and the hose and enjoying neither of them completely.

I could only see something like this working safely if there was an entire other person dedicated to keeping watch on the hookah and making sure it stays secure.
The reason this is a fail is perception is reality. Like Rani said you could be the safest driver and have the best rig set up for car driving and a great co-pilot. You may not have caused the accident, but the very minute the cop sees the hookah it will be your fault. his perception will be you were distracted at the very least and worse he will think you were using NHT. Just the way a cop brain works.

I feel like, too, if a squad car saw someone driving with clouds of smoke coming outa the car (as undoubtedly any hookah smoker wants good clouds), or filling it, they'd immediately pull it over. That seems like way too much of an inconvenience to me. And, most likely, they'd give you a ticket then and there for distracted driving. You possibly could get it contested if you indeed had people in the car who were really handling it, not you the driver, but I don't know. Still seems just like a bad idea in practicality all around.

Ive done it. Was driving back from the dunes and stopped by the sultan sea to set it up driving long stretch with the hookah was nicebuthad to turn it off on the free way no way i was gonna risk accident .On a long lonely stretch of road it was nice no worrys the border patrol check point the Border patrol guys look at it but i guess he knew what it was and let me go on my way after the usual where you headed are you citizen questions . would defiantly never smoke while driving on the freeway . would smoke at the Sultan sea had the beach bin littered with tons of dead fish .

I mean, I'm not opposed to doing it, but the only time I'd do it is on the long two lane road on the way from my house to my college. One smoke session would fill that ride perfectly as it's an hour and a half drive. Isn't that really what the leila is designed for?

Just FYI, it's Salton Sea. (I lived near there for a dozen years.) It's called that because there used to be salt mines there, and some idiot engineer had the bright idea to dig too far towards the ocean believe it or not. There was an influx of sea water that was eventually damned by among other things explosions and entire railroad cars dropped into the channel, but the water was forever salted from the mines now at its bottom without in influx of fresh water. It gets saltier and saltier every year until eventually it will be a Dead Sea.

All valid points... but please, take a moment and notice the greater things in life...

Such as the thread topic saying "Poll: Smoking and Driving"

That, my friends, is a treasure I give to you all.

The summer before last my soul sister and I took a cross-continental roadtrip. For days at a time we'd be cruising five miles over the speed limit on the interstate with little traffic, listening to music and smoking clove cigarettes. We brought a tiny hookah with us, and duct-taped it to the center console for a day or two and used it a couple of times. We had a bowl with a secure cover on it, so we didn't have to worry about loose fire in the car. It wasn't really much of a distraction aside from being paranoid about cops. Of course the co-pilot handled all preparations.
