D15L
i tried searching this up but couldn't really find an answer. I actually got a couple of questions. When im smoking in the first few minutes, its really good and smooth but in a bit when i try to inhale alot it feels like it kind of hurts my lungs and i will cough if i hit it more, does this have anything to do with harsh smoke? Also, i really like it when there is alot of smoke but can't seem to get that much, i was wonderin how i could get alot of smoke. Thanks everyone! NEO_WRX
sounds like both of your issues (a harsh smoke or a lack of thick smoke production) all has to do with heat management. what type/size coal are you using? if you notice after some time that smoke is getting harsh just adjust the placement of your coal...because chances are your burning the shisha but letting the coal sit for too long. As far as not getting a good amount of smoke...this may be due to too little heat being applied. It's tricky to get it all to work together but a little experimenting and you should find what works best for you. I've also heard that using some milk in the base will increase the thickness of the smoke, that might help also.
mushrat
What neo said..minus the milk...
D15L
hey thanks alot for the help. Currently i am using 3 kings coal and i usually put on 1 coal at a time. Today i tried putting on 1 coal plus a broken quarter on but couldn't get too much smoke, the flavour was not too strong either. The tabacco was not filled to the top, only about half way so would that be one of the reasons why there is not much smoke and flavour?
mushrat
Well, I often only use half a bowl, so thats not it. Try 1 1/2 pieces. I'd keep adding pieces until it started to smoke the way you wanted. If it gets too harsh, back off a piece. You might also try placing your coals around the outer edge of your bowl, instead of smack dab in the middle if thats what you are doing. Heat management is just a matter of practice. Oh, and just to make the game more fun...different brands will require different amounts of heat, so you'll have to keep track of that little detail as well... D15L
hey thanks for your help, at one point last nite my smoke got really thick. In the first session, it was pretty good but not huge amounts of smoke, then when that one coal went low we added broken pieces of coal onto the bowl, a few minutes later, it started giving thick clouds, to the point where i couldn't see the person in front of me for a few seconds when i blew all my smoke out. That was really satisfying

Glottis
Uh, okay.Anyway, sometimes you just need to let the coals do their work. I wouldn't expect to get flavor and thick smoke until you are at least a few minutes into the session, since it takes time to heat up the tobacco to the right point. Sure, you can get this right away, but then the tobacco is going to get too hot and burn (like you detailed in the first post) unless you are extremely talented at managing coals. The moral of the story is, try as hard as you can to not overwhelm it with heat, and don't get impatient with the smoke or you will burn and regret it. Sonthert
That particular effect is seen from humidity effects, notably the tobacco being accustomed to drier air than it is being smoked in.What brand are you smoking?
D15L
the brand that i am smoking is nakhla and its caramel, am i doing something wrong or does nakhla caramel taste a bit weird, not very much like caramel. I was in my session tonite when me and friends realized it tasted weird, is it bad when the burnt parts of the coal seap into the holes of the foil, because when i remove the burnt residue from the coal and i inhale, it seems like the residue is falling into the tiny holes? Sonthert
Yeah, Nahkla contains nicotine. It will experience humidity effects. Open the container oftobacco up to the air you will be smoking it in for like 24 hours before the next time you smoke it and see if that helps.
