Hassouni
So yesterday I got my THIRD replacement vase for my No. 1 nargile (Lebanese). The original vase on that was super high quality, and lasted almost 5 years before someone dropped it hard and it shattered. Since then, all I can find is Egyptian-made bases. First replacement I picked up from Beirut - made in Egypt, within a few weeks it got all these hairline cracks without being dropped. Second replacement - "Syrian" base from Hookah-Shisha, arrived with a Made in Jordan tag, covering a Made in Egypt tag! That one shattered in my hands when I was trying to get the stem out. Now to the current one. I really like it, it's a very nice color, and the design, while "rustic" is pretty classy. Guess what: I tried to wash it today after smoking it last night and all the damn paint and shit is peeling off! Look at this: First from a good angle Now for the peeling, etc: It even got all over my hands! What the hell is the deal, why is it so hard to get a base like my old one that just WORKS for more than a few weeks? GeorgieHC
Pigmented glasses are the best, acid stained is much more permanent, and painted look nice but always will peel and chip off, so it depends on quality how long you have before you it happens. mustafabey
I ordered one of those Egyptian vases, in blue and what I got had glitter paint on it. I wish the paint would flake off!

Arcane
painting clear glass is cheaper than making pigmented glass.....
Hassouni
At least the other bases I had were pigmented. I'm not sure if this one is clear, it might be pigmented but with something applied to make it matte in places. Still though, ONE WASH? jesus. Is there anything I can paint it with that's permanent? Does shellac stick to glass? It sticks to just about everything else, and only comes off with rubbing alcohol Edited June 29, 2010 by Hassouni
antouwan
go to the hardware store and snag a can of krylon clear coat. satin or glossy, it's your call. go outside. put some newspaper down. put the base upside down and go to town on that bitch. keeps my km bases from peeling. silly egypians, quality glass is eastern europeans! ih303
I feel your frustration. In fact, I've considered switching over entirely to Mya's at my lounge because of the inconsistencies of Egyptian Bases. I seem to have the most luck with KM bases. They seem to be of a slightly higher quality than their generic counterparts. My big gripe is the sizing. We have a whole bunch of Egyptian hookahs that have to be paired up with a specific base or else they won't fit right. It makes it a pain in the ass.
Antouwan, what kind of feel does the Krylon have after you spray it? Does it feel plasticky or does it still feel like glass? Quality glass IS Eastern European. The vendor in Beirut claimed my original base was Bohemian, even though it was shaped like a normal bell-vase. However, the quality of the glass was really good, and as I said, it stood up to 5 years of knocks before packing it in so maybe he was right. If I knew where to get a Bohemian traditionally-shaped vase, I'd buy a handful. In 7 months, I've had THREE Egyptian vases, all of which have had problems. I REALLY also want to know what's up with Hookah-Shisha selling a "Syrian" base, which then has a Made in Jordan tag, concealing a Made in Egypt tag. Sooo it's Egyptian masquerading as Jordanian pretending to be Syrian? Come on. At least the one before that had صنع مصر (product of egypt) engraved on the bottom, not covered by anything. All the three Egyptian vases I've had in the last couple months have ostensibly been the same size...but not really. What do vendors that have a lot of turnover do when they, say, sell a KM? Do they just go through their stock of vases and see what fits? What a waste of time.
poncho
Hey, so here's the deal, the paint is almost always going to chip and peel off of the glass because its a non porous surface. The paint cannot absorb into anything therefore it cant really stick. The paint would have to be a special enamel to make it permanently on there. It requires the glass to be brought up to a temperature to melt essentially powered glass. Like on the Corona bottles, or Rolling rock or bottle that the labels cannot come off. I'm sure you can find some paint specifically designed for painting on glass which you could make your own nice designs.

Any how, I've never had a base break, and last nigght i accidentally slammed 2 egyptian bases together. they survived...for now. But yeah, i haven't had any base break, maybe i've just gotten lucky so far.
