Please Help Me!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys! I'm new to the forum and I love reading all of the new topics. Great site! I really only registered, however, to ask you guys for some help.

I used to have one of the original small phunnel bowls in storm blue. It smoked AMAZINGLY! One of my dumb friends, however, knocked it over, and it broke. Not even thinking I quickly went to HJ and bought one of the "new style" small tangiers phunnel bowls... i mean it's tangiers, if it's new it's got to be better, and besides the "old style" wasn't available anymore. The new head is SO DIFFERENT and imo terrible. The hookah seems to burn and get harsh now matter how many different ways i pack it or what tobacco i use, the smoke isn't nearly as thick and if i add another coal it just gets too harsh. Sometimes the bowl overflows and molasses leaks down the stem, what i would nEVER expect from a phunnel bowl. I mean I don't know, I just didn't expect this from a phunnel, let alone a tangiers phunnel.

So, I'm asking if anybody has a small tangiers phunnel bowl, NOT THE NEW STYLE, that they would like to sell to me. or maybe even just give to me, hell idk. Or maybe even swap with me, I currently have the small tangiers new style phunnel bowl in spotted blue.

also, I've tried tons of different methods of packing the tobacco and even different brands of tobacco with teh bowl, but if anybody ahs any ideas of what I'm doing wrong or what i could do to help please feel free to criticize.

thanks everybody!!!

also if you'd like to contact me about selling the small tangiers phunnel just email me. omaratcho@gmail.com

If you're looking to trade or sell it, you should post a thread in the Trades section. I think you have to have 50 posts first, though. Not sure, so please don't quote me on it.

Now, as for helping you to get that bowl smoking gooood, you need to give us some basic information first.

1. How are you packing the bowl? What brand tobacco (probably Tang), how dense, above, below, or level with the rim, etc...
2. What kind of coals are you using?
3. What's your hole poking pattern?

Once we know how you're packing it and what you're doing for heat management, we'll be able to help you out a little bit.

Just to help Chris out here...lol You need a minimum of 5 approved post and you can post in the trades section. Good luck

See, you think I would've seen that right there in Trades where it says it... Thanks man.

lol thanks for all of the replies already guys!

and since i don't have the 5 posts yet I'm going to stay here and talk my issues out with you guys haha.

SO....

I'm using al fakher mainly, also starbuzz, i've tried nakhla, but i usually stick with the drippy stuff. i havent had a chance to try tangiers with it yet

i've tried packing it tight up to the inner rim, that's how i packed it with my previous bowl and never did i have any problems,

i've tried packing it loosley to the inner rim

i've tried it tight below the inner rim

i've tried it loose below the inner rim

i've tried slightly over hte inner rim

hole poking pattern: usualy just lines across the bowl except for where the inner rim is, i put one large hole there, nothing special, it worked perfectly fine with my last bowl, ahhh =/

and for coals i've tried the CH hookah instant lights, coconaras, and the extra large, i think 44mm, 3kings.

sorry for the really ugly, sloppy, and mistake-ridden post, i'm late for a date with the lady. any help is appcreciated!!! thanks a bunch guys! you're all so nice!!

I have one of the new tangiers small, I missed out on the old small. So this new one is more like a medium from what I hear. Anyway I haven't used any AF but have done the others in my small and except for tangiers I pack it pretty loosley and even with rim. So far I haven't had any probs. I don't use it much cause of the amount of shisha it takes up but no trouble with it. I use 3 coco's when I use mine as well..and just regular circle pin hole pattern..no hole for me over center of it. Hope you can get it going cause it does destribute heat really great.

It seems you've tried almost all the variables, so I can only tell you what I do.
I smoke a lot of AF out of a small. I pack it loosely till a bit over the rim, then use either HD foil or a double layer of regular foil, then use something thin (like a safety pin) to poke holes all the way down to the bottom, in three concentric circles from the outside in, then 4-6 holes over the center. Then blow into and out of the bowl for airflow purposes. I then pop on three Coconaras, placed as 3 points of a triangle, such that the full area of each coal is NOT fully over the tobacco, i'd say maybe 60-70% is, the rest is hanging off the side.

Also, read this recent and still active thread: My Backwards Phunnel Hole Pattern Method

It works amazingly well with Al-Fakher, last time I smoked I used that method with it. Brilliant.

thanks for all of the replies guys i really appreciate it, i guess i'm just going to have to give it one more go, but i must ask... do you EVER pack it tight? with tangiers maybe? and if so how would you pack that? because with the old small i'd be getting doomsday clouds and great flavor with every session no matter how tight i packed the tobacco, whatever brand it was.

just trying to get a feel for this new bowl.

thanks again guys!

I didn't know there was a difference between the old ones and the new ones... Should smoke the same.

Tangiers you will definitely want to pack TIGHT. As tight as it comes when you get it new in the bag. Smokes best that way. For me, I can get away with packing Lucid a tad lighter. It still smokes good for me.

oh definitely, the new ones are deeper and have a smaller circumference. do you have the new or old style bowl sir?

I have an original Tangiers Mini Phunnel and an old red/black small... I know what you mean about the new smalls being deeper. I had a blue one, and it was hella deep. But no one else complains, and I never noticed it being deeper having an effect on the quality of the smoke. Honestly, Eric of Tangiers wouldn't put out a shitty product. My guess is he made them deeper for a reason. That reason, I do not know. You'd have to ask him.

are you referring to an actual tangiers phunnel bowl or the new "alien" mini phunnel bowl?

the newer TANGIERS phunnels shouldn't smoke much differently than the newer ones....

oh nm...if it's deeper than that's kinda just bad luck...there's newer ones that are somewhat shallower than some older phunnels that i got....

it's kinda hit or miss....i have a deep small phunnel, but it smokes fine for me (with Tangiers)....i've not tried it with other tobaccos though...i'd most likely treat it as any other small phunnel though, just end up using more tobacco since there's more space to fill...

so do you think i should pack it loosely or tightly? say with al fakher, for example, because that's mostly what i've got on hand.

i sprinkle it loosely 1/2in over the rim....then apply the foil tightly...the foil should push the tobacco down and compress it somewhat....you will probably be using more tobacco than you're used to....

works for me....

I find with AF that a loose but plentiful pack works for me.don't skimp but you don't cram it in there either.

 • 4 months later...
I recently just bought a phunnel bowl from my local smoke shop. Was really excited becuase they have been sold out at almost every smoke smoke I've been to. When I started smoking it it was really milky and I was getting great clouds with my friend. Only about 10 minutes into the session it started to die a little and I was wondering why I wasn't getting milky clouds anymore. When I removed the foil there was still plenty of shisha left and only a little of it was burnt. I was using 3 coconara coals with a mod hookah set. Any help?
