Long Lasting Bowl Techniques?

I was at a hookah lounge yesterday, they used standard Egyptian bowls, 33mm insta-light coals, and AF tobacco, and it easily lasted two hours. I'm wondering if there's some kind of technique for packing the shisha that I'm missing, because I'm using just about the same set up, though larger coals, and my bowls last only about fortyfive minutes. Furthermore, I'm getting a solid odd taste the entire time. I have a nammor hose, cleaned, as well as a Syrian hookah, also cleaned. Lastly, I switched from a standard Eqyptian bowl to my vortex bowl, with lightly packed and tightly packed shisha, and the entire time it tastes odd with a chemical-ish edge. I'm also using a metal screen, as opposed to foil, due to the re-usability. Anybody have any tips to prolong a bowl of shisha for that solid two hours of delicious, thick smoke?
