Rumjaku
Hi, I bought a new (my first) hookah sometime ago, and I've only smoked it about 5 times over 6 months, mostly because there is something terribly wrong with it. I know it is not my coal or tobacco as I've smoked from other friends hookahs and they hade the same products. My hookah pipe is made of brass, and during each smoke there is an overwhelming taste of CHEMICALS, wtf? Then we usually get headaches after smoking it. When I got to clean the hookah with water and a brush, this green residue comes out of the pipe, I'm guessing the brass has oxidized or some crap like that. Is there any way to fix this? If there is no solution, I am going to just take the pipe back to exchange it, the guy is really cool and I'm sure he will let me do it. Please help, any feedback is appreciated much. mushrat
Rum, Ok, as long as the BOWL isnt brass. Is the entire thing brass? No glass vase etc? To be honest, I've not heard anything good about the all brass Indian type hookahs, but that doesn't really mean anything. The green slime is from the liquid in the Ma'asell, not your hookah. Everyone gets it no matter what kind of hookah they have, so that part is normal. You say they had the same products, did you use YOUR stuff in their hookahs? Just because its from the same company it may not be from the same batch, and apparently 3 kings for instance, are having problems with different batches. Also what kind of Ma'asell are you using? Some of those can be pretty different from run to run. Mushrat
Rumjaku
Thanks, my hookah base is glass. And the blow is clay I'm pretty sure. No, I didn't use my stuff in their hookahs, but I'm trying to get around to that today. Anyways the green crap sticks to the insides of the pipe, and you can see it stuck on some parts where it leaked out, it's really gross, and if thats normal, then ok thats cool. If I rinse the pipe immediately after use just clear water comes through, if I use my brush then the green residue will come out.
Rumjaku
Can't edit posts... forgot to say, I am using ma'asell from ETMCO called Layalina... or whatever, thats what it says on the box. Also, I am using coals from Diamante.
mushrat
Ahh... Layalina should be ok, though it may depend on the particular flavour. I have a brass stem hookah myself and i do not believe there is any way it could produce a chemical taste..so that really shouldnt be be cause of that probelm or your headaches. If you have cleaned it well, with the brushes, top to bottom, including the vase, it has to be in either your coal or your ma'asell. hmm..have you tried just sucking air through your hose, disconnected from the rest of the hookah? Is it a washable type? The only thing i can really suggest is switching stuff with your friends and trying a side by side smoke. if they suddenly get nasty taste and yours is ok...its a bad batch of coals i'd wager. hope this helps. Catalyst Paintball
From personal experience, I found that washing your hose can make the difference from a good or sh*tty smoke.I was smoking a bowl of Starbuzz Mango and it straight up tasted like sh*t. This was the 2nd bad smoke I had, right after I fired up some Havana Mint. Ended up giving up on that bowl of Mango, and decided to clean my hookah out. Stem, base, hoses.Took a smell of the uncleaned hoses, and they reaked. When I washed them out, I was able to pull out orange water, as well as that smell. Been very good ever since. If you can wash your hose, DO IT!If not, buy some washable hoses. And mush, you going to reply to my PM anytime soon?!? Sonthert
Make sure your hose is washable BEFORE you clean it. Don't use anything but plain water to clean your pipe. You may have gotten a bad batch of tobacco...it isn't unheard of.I'm sure the brass is not to blame. Are you brushing out the shank real well? The whole length? Is there a foul smell associated with your pipe?
SanguineSolitude
you need to get the green slime out. so scrub that baby really well. I reccomend using hot hot water with plain white vinegar (about 10:1) in it to scrub out with. it cleans well and kills the odors and im assuming anything else. make sure you can run water through the stem without it coming out off color before you smoke it again. i usually rinse my hookah after every use and scrub everything about every 5 uses. a clean hookah is next to a godly hookah. dodraugen2k
I had a similar experience.Until a month ago I only had experience with a hookah a friend of mine bought from Turkey. Don't know what brand it is or anything like that, but I'm pretty happy with the way it has been working out.A friend of mine is going to study far away from us for the next semester, so me and a friend of mine desided to buy him a hookah. We're not rich, so we bought a pretty cheap one (costed about 50 bucks). I'm starting to regret that. The same night that we bought it we desided to test it. When we opened the bag it came in we noticed a wierd smell, don't exactly know how to describe it. Anyways, we desided to give it a try. It didn't taste good at all, we made the shisha like we always do, the same goes for the coal (we did smoke the hookah that my friend owned too, and that one worked out fine as usual). It tasted like the smell we noticed when we first took the hookah out of it's bag. My friend got notiouc (gah, can't spell this word, "feeling like he would soon throw up") and I got a mild headache. Later on that night I got fever. I don't really think that would have anything to do with the hookah, but I found it wierd that both me and one of my friends reacted to it in a negative way. Don't really know what's wrong with it, or if it's cleanable (how can I chech this?).
lilotaku
I know this is a stupid question, but did you guys wash the hookah before you used it? I know that if i leave any of my hookahs sitting around for a long while without smoking them, the insides will tarnish and will produce an odd smell. I always clean my hookahs before i smoke if they have been left sitting around for a long while.
Sonthert
To both of youse: I remember I got my first hookah and I smoked it happily for three days...then I noticed a smell...I smoked it again...crummy. I rinse my hookah after each use. I think it works best to reduce smell and flavor problems. Just rinsing mind you.
