Dogseatfood
So, being new to this whole Hookah thing I was wondering if cleaning the hookah with soap and water is okay! I've read threads about cleaning tips and how to get deep cleanings and things, but I just don't have that kinda time. So If I just took a bottle of dish soap filled the sink with water and then put the hookah in and scrubbed it, also making sure the stem and such were clean. would that be an issue? Josh Hamilton
oh my stupid eyes didnt read the OP...I apologize sir if you plan to give it a bath just take out the purge valve/ball bearings as it can rust easily..everything else is good to go / oh I would stay away from abrasive cleaners (steel sconge scrubs)
Hassouni
I steer clear of soap for stuff like that (as well as for tea and coffee pots) because it can leave soap residue depending on what kind of water you have, and you dont want that mixing with your soap. What I do, and I think a lot of others do (help me out here, forum!) is use water and lemon or lime juice. I guess the acidity cuts through any grime, and it leaves it smelling better, and there's less chance it'll not get totally flushed out

Just make sure you finish with a nice rinse or two. We should really compile a "hookah care" thread that stays stickied. Lol.
ryno
I just use water and my brushes. I stopped using soap after I got some bubbles in my mouth through the hose... Not tasty.
questions
I am not advertising for this company as I don't get anything from it...but there is a company that makes this product called "the hookah cleaner"...I feel it works well and leaves no aftertaste or anything like that just my two cents.... Chreees
I use baking soda and lemon juice for deep cleanings. Usually I just use water, though.
antouwan
i usually just use soapy water for the initial cleaning when i FIRST get the pipe because in KMs there's all kinds of nasty crap in there that needs soap to be broken down. after that, i just use water because i don't want any perfuming agents in the soap effect the flavors of the hookah. usually: water + brushes. deep clean: lemon juice, baking soda, brushes. A13lackFish
dish soap works fine for bases, i dont recommend you pushing it down the stem... your best mix for an oder removing clean would be buy 90% or above rubbing alcohol (its like 2 bucks a giant bottle) pour some into the base, then add salt, and hot water. Shake (with hand over the opening) rinse, and rinse until there is nothing left in there. As to the stem, stick with the standard brush that is likely provided with your hookah. I clean all my phunnel and regular bowls using dish soap and my my fingers, then rinse etc. welcome to the hookah experience

IainUM
I use dish soap, but I rinse it out many many times. Like after I am sure I have all the soap out, I rinse it out another time or two to be sure. This process has worked for me for a while
Stuie
This how I do everything and for years now. Bases - Dawn and Water - swirl a few times and rinse Stems - Dawn and Water - brush and rinse well Washable Hoses - Lemon Juice and Water - swish from end to end several times the rinse with water Non Washable Hoses - Few good overhead lasso swings outside Bowls - Water - For Deep Cleaning - Boil in Water and Baking Soda
Mikefu
I use dish soap and water for my stem and base, unless the base is funky after smoking a really strong ghosting flavor, the I wash it and then soak it with baking soda and water for a few hours. I just use water for my bowls, and lime juice with some water for hoses. Pretty standard.

I think it was some kind of burnt machine oil mixed with a bunch of welding soot. Like the soot that builds up in your fireplace except greasy. It came out just fine, but I'm really glad I wasn't all excited to smoke and didn't skip cleaning to smoke. That'd have been awful.
