ukhookah
I'm just smoking my first tangiers lucid right now. I let it acclimate for 3-4 hours tthe night before. I packed it tight to the rim. As I'm smoking I can here sizzling noise. I can see the juices coming from the hole. As I smoke I get good flavour but also a rich tobacco taste. A tickle I expected and I don't mind. My question is, isit ment to sizzle? And does the slight rich tobacco taste normal or do I need to acclimate it more?

mitchard
If stuff is dripping that badly, its overpacked. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACfPMVGV2V0 Use that video. They are packing Noir there I think, but I pack Lucid the same way and it works fine.
ukhookah
I'm smoking orange soda. And yes its dripping a fair amount. I packed it how eric showed on hookahjons vid. And I did the foil test which had a good depression
Arcane
it's fine...there may be a slight tobacco taste if you're using a little bit too much heat... back off the heat a little by pushing the coals farther to the edges of the bowl and see if that fixes it... btw, sizzling is normal....and little wisps of smoking from the top of the bowl is normal too... ukhookah
I acclimated it because on the package instructions it indicated to do so. Also when I opened the package it had a very strong tobacco smell but I've managed to get it smelling like orange with a hint of burnt smell. I also figured the humidty/climate may be very different in the uk compared to the states so felt there was no harm I'm doing so.

As I was expecting a solid orange soda taste and no tobacco taste
it is possible for the tobacco to need more acclimation. Eric and I had a short discussion that it may be harder to tell if Lucid is fully acclimated, since the nicotine is removed. The theory was that the nicotine actually aids in determining acclimation since it's very susceptible to humidity shock. Without the nicotine, the flavoring may still need time to adjust, however there may not be a pronounced bbq/soy sauce smell. Removing the nicotine basically eliminates your acclimation "gauge". There are other flavors where the tobacco flavor is inherent, such as Strawberry or Blackthorn. Watermelon too, I think.

I did let my BGB sit out for a few hours but there was just a slight increase in aroma... please explain why some people do?
it's actually pretty simple...Tangiers (all lines) is susceptible to humidity shock, due to the low water content...the amount of nicotine enhances it's susceptibility. removing most of the nicotine, as with lucid, increases the tolerance...however it does not make it immune. the greater the difference in humidity when tobacco is opened, the greater the chance that the tobacco will succumb to humidity shock. the reason why some people do not think acclimation is needed with lucid is probably due to the fact that their climate is not too far off from San Diego's. also, there are some flavors that are more easily affected... i am one of those people that buy Lucid, primarily to reduce the chance of needing acclimation...however, i know from experience that even Lucid can go wonky in Hawaii's climate...and to further drive home the point, i have Lucid BBQ Brambleberry acclimating right now.... this is actually why the talk of a higher water content line of Tangiers was floating around....to try and avoid the need for acclimation altogether. Arcane
here's an older thread with a few people mentioning issues with lucid as well (even though the thread was originally started for Noir issues)....there's actually another longer thread, but i'm a bit too lazy to find it... you can try a search for acclimation or something similar, if you really want to read up on it....btw, that particular thread was the start of the 4/20 initiative....so, it'd probably be worth the trouble of finding anyways.. http://www.hookahforum.com/topic/31233-do-you-have-trouble-getting-tangiers-to-acclimate/page__hl__lucid another link just for fun: http://www.hookahforum.com/topic/26369-does-lucid-need-to-be-acclimated Edited July 28, 2010 by Arcane

Arcane
one of Eric's local customers also has a theory....i'm not sure if it's correct, but it's plausible... supposedly Lucid makes determining if acclimation is achieved a bit difficult, since you don't have the nicotine to make it smell bad....there's a thought that even though Lucid smells good, the flavorings could still be suffering from issues... pretty interesting....at least, to me... ukhookah
Might be worth while posting a new thread discussing who's had problems and who hasent at acclimating or getting to smoke right either lucid or noir and statibg which country state and city they are from. It might allow us to see if there's a patterb. Any thoughts guys?
Webbles
If it smells delicous enough to eat, then ya dont need to acclimate it. BUT if it doesnt smell good, then ya have to leave it out for it to acclimate. How long to acclimate? Lucid takes ALOT less time than noir. BUT keep it out till it smells good. IMO, all shisha could use some acclimation, but thats another thread for another time.

I'm still acclimating it, but I have a question about this video before I start smoking it. It seems like he packs the bowl really high - I've never packed mine that high before. Won't the coals be sitting directly on the shisha and burn it? Obviously I'm not the expert on Tangiers, so I'm asking because I want to make sure I get the best out of my experience. So should I pack it to the rim, or leave a little bit of room so the coal won't touch the shisha?

I still don't see where this myth got started. Every single one of my bowls, the shisha touches the foil and they don't burn, they smoke just fine. ukhookah
I've managed to improve my tangiers packing. I pack my phunnell with a slight depression. That stopped my juiced over flowing and smokes great There's no real problem with shisha touching foil.
