Hassouni
Perhaps this should be in the general chit-chat section, if so, mods, please move it? I'm drinking a kalimotxo while smoking, never done that before, and it goes SO well the fruitiness of the tobacco, it's AWESOME! For those that don't know, it's red wine and coke, quite popular in Spain (sounds nasty but so good!)
kajon
I visited my friends in Valencia, Spain while they studied abroad and they love that drink. I don't care for it too much but any drink with hookah goes well together.
Hassouni
I find this goes with it much better than my normal pint of beer does. I made a mojito the other night while smoking, and while a well made mojito is always awesome, I feel that this clashes less than that does
Hassouni
Apparently I can't edit. I'd also like to note that with a weak flavor like I'm smoking now (this USELESS fusion crap), the drink really flavors the smoke on the exhale, it's quite nice! Arcane
what red wine is recommended? i'm not sure i'd want to pour coke into a 97 Maya Cab...
Hassouni
Something good but affordable enough that you won't care about pouring coke on it. I'm using a good, cheap Argentine malbec
Arcane
and any red? doesn't matter if it's more fruit than spice? earthy or smokey?
Jeff_T
I believe it should be a little spicier more Spanish/South American type wine (I'm a wine noob though, so this could be completely off). I've had this/made this before and it is very tasty for a strange sounding combo. In college we also did this but because we didn't care about how good the wine was I think we used a thug jug of Carlo, probably merlot or cab sav. kyleSD
yeah a malbec or trapiche would go nicely, do you just do equal parts coke to wine or what?
IainUM
i gotta try this
antouwan
a calimocho is just a 'party drink' in spain. creted in pais basco but extremely popular in madrid with knowledge and some popularity in other parts of spain. it's done with spanish wine but any wine works. most of the stuff we drank was tempranillo. also, keep your reserva and gran reserva in the cellar for this one; you'll be safe just using the crianza. this drink is to taste. half and half works well, but adjust it depending on what flavor ratio you want more coke or wine. i would also recommend hunting down colas made with cane sugar as the corn syrup really does impact the finish. it's kinda like a wine spritzer - but for reds - so you want to keep it clean tasty and not weighted down and feeling syrupy. all the colas in spain are sweetened with sugar, and just using regular coke from the grocery store does make a difference. you CAN use diet whatever, but this will also impact the taste significantly. i mean, you CAN use root beer - i guess. just had some tonight: mexican coke and sangre del toro. delish. ...my 2 cents. Hassouni
Echoing the above, any red will work, just don't use your treasured bottles on this. I do roughly 50-50. Also, I find diet Coke and Pepsi thoroughly revolting, so if you try them and it doesn't come out well, you know what you did!
Caila
This drink sounds really interesting I would have never put Red Wine and Coke together, but now I have to try it!
C'mon Jay. Sack up and use the real stuff for it. J/k, but I'd imagine the taste would be off using a diet substitute. I'm with Hassouni on diet stuff. I rarely drink soda anyway, but if I do it's got to be the good stuff. I just though of this, but you could almost do a pseudo calimocho with Basha grape (or any stronger red grape shisha) and a some cola shisha I'd imagine. Not sure what a good cola shisha would be since I've not had one, but anyone want to test this out and report back?
Hassouni
I think Antouwan said Basha grape and AF cola works

Arcane
i actually prefer the taste of the diet versions of most soft drinks...i drink 1 can of diet coke almost every day at work... might make an except for the cali drink....maybe i can find a real sugar cola around here... Hassouni
As awesome as proper-sugar coke is, I've used the standard HFCS American stuff almost exclusively and my above praise is based on that
antouwan
i was just trying to keep it as faithful to what i was drinking in spain as possible. that's why i also went out of my way to get sangre del toro lol but it isn't like it's some super-expensive combo or anything, i mean calimochos aren't exactly a top-shelf libation.
