joanna
Alright, so I got the bowl, and tried it for the first time last night. I wasn't extremely thrilled. I've read reviews that say they packed a bowl and it lasted for 2 or 3 hours, and could have lasted longer. Mine lasted about an hour before burning. I'm hoping that I did something wrong, and that I didn't waste money on this bowl. I was using nakhla mizo watermelon, and I tried packing it two ways. First, I just packed it loosely until it almost reached the top of the bowl, then put the foil on. The second time, I packed it loosely until it was a little over the rim, then pushed it down with the foil. Each time I used two circles of holes, and one bigger hole in the middle. I used 3 coco nara coals each time. So tell me - what did I do wrong? Or is it only Tangiers that lasts so long in the bowl?
mitchard
Tangiers will last much longer than most brands in the phunnel, but I have gotten a couple hours out of Nakhla Mizo too. I pack it pretty tightly, put on two Coconaras, and use a windcover when needed. About 45 minutes in i'll put a new coals on, or just light en entire new batch of fresh ones. As far as foil goes, I do the same with Nak as I do with Tangiers. Three rings of toothpick holes, poking all the way to the bottom of the bowl. No hole in the middle, though it doesnt matter too much. Try using a little less heat. Nakhla is easy to nuke real fast if you use a lot of heat on it. cotsi95
Its really only tangiers that lasts an extremely long time. A phunnel will slightly lengthen your sessions but not extend them by hours. If you having problem with burning thats in your heat management. I would try more holes and less heat and then gradually build up heat wise from there. What coals are you using? rhineholt
It's all about how you pack it. I had a bowl of mizo mint going for 4 hours, then we stopped smoking it for a while, came back to it and smoked it for 2 more hours. The last two hours had no flavor, but it was still smoking godly. Try to pack it tighter. Also, use less heat. like stated above.
Chreees
I'm going to give you a link here in a bit to the best tutorial for packing Nakhla in a phunnel, as I'm on my iPhone right now... Don't get discouraged yet. Biggest mistake you made was packing it light. Nak likes to be packed tight. Also, tell us what coals you were using, and how many. I'll link that tutorial soon. Don't hate the phunnel just yet- it'll soon amaze you. I've gotten several hours out of my phunnel with Nak.

Chreees
Damn, my bad Mitch... I just got off work after working all night... give a brotha a break. http://www.hookahforum.com/topic/31762-nakhla-tutorial/ That's the thread that will be of great use to you. Since you're already using Coconaras, looks like you're set... Check my "How to cut Coconaras" thread in my signature for the best/easiest way (IMO) to cut the CCNs. joanna
I checked out that thread, and I'm trying all your pointers as I type this. It's been going about 45 minutes, and it still tastes ok. I'm wondering - is it ok that the tobacco touches the foil? Will this make all the tobacco burn, or just the top layer?
Chreees
It's okay. Actually, I don't think I've ever gotten it to smoke good without it touching the foil. If you're doing everything just like the tutorial, then it must be your heat management... Try two CCNs. Did you pack it tight?
joanna
Everything worked out pretty well this time! I used 2 coconaras cut in half, and it was a little strong, so I cut it down to one. The sad part is that I didn't feel like smoking any longer (nakhla hits me a bit strong, and sometimes I have to stop early), so I didn't find out how much it could have gone past an hour. But only the top layer of tobacco was burnt, and the bottom was still pretty juicy, so I saved it. Thanks for all the advice everyone!

Barnaby
Whoa, first I heard of Nakhla being sensitive to heat. Maybe mizo, but the normal stuff I don't think its possible to burn. LOL Tutorial is a good start, but I tend to put more in there. The clouds look small to me in comparison to what I get, but they had some wind it said. Either way, when I pack it, I pack it TIGHT. Almost Tangiers tight. put about 4 circles of wooden kabob holes all around, none in the middle. 3 FULL cocos, and away we go. I even throw my windcover on alittle, to get the phunnel heated up. And when its going, it nothing but pure smooth, sweet melon, dragon sized clouds of goodness. This lasts me 2 rounds, so, about 2 hours. It is quite simply the easiest, repeatable experience I get on my hookah. Tangiers, I am hit or miss alot, but more so than not. Nakhla is my go to, when I don't feel like messing around, and maybe getting a good session. It just works! EvansLight
Tutorials and tips can only get you so far. Each hookah, each bowl, and each person is different. Gotta try and learn whats best for you, just experiment a lot. And as for Tangiers tobacco smoking the longest in the phunnels, i usually have 3hr sessions off mine, using my favorite Starbuzz X On The Beach. And I'm with Barnaby, I've seriously put the spurs to some Nakhla and never had it burn. Must be some fairly dry stuff.

On my small phunnel, I can get 3 cocos on it, and a wind cover. Doesn't burn at all, doesn't lose flavor, and there is a GARGANTUAN amount of smoke coming out. Granted I do rotate the wind cover off and on alittle, to be sure, but nak needs and takes some heat.
